hi everyone im new on this site so ill start by saying hello.

i have a 1970 chevelle and for some reason when i went to start it up it made a grinding sound coming from the starter so i thought emediatly it was the flywheel theeth grinding down.
so i jacked up the car a little and i went under to see what was going on. i had another person turn the key to start it while i held a flashlight to the starter and the flywheel to so what was going on.
when the starter engages (like pops out) it just barly touches the flywheel and its not turning the flywheel at all. so the starter spins in one place.

how do i get my starter closer to my fly wheel? so the teeth connect perfect. someone told me to shim it but all that would do is move it further away from the flywheel. some part of me thinks that if i can turn the flywheel it might connect better with the starter but how can i turn the flywheel? if it doesnt run .is there a way i can turn the flywheel i tried with a flate head but its to hard. any sagestions everyone,
thank you
kyle

Kyle,From your decription of distance between the starter housing and the block is approx 1/8" too far.The only options I can think of is 1st, remove the existing starter and measure the distance between the teeth and the starter mounting surface,Go to your parts store and look through their inventory to find one with a proper (shorter) distance,2nd is to mill the mounting surface of your current starter enough to bring it closer for proper engagement.

I went thru this on my chevelle. The 327 was originally out of a 68 caprice, and after about six starters from different parts stores we ended going with a part # for a 68 corvettte. It was the only one that fit.You might have to try different part #'s.

Hello Kyle. You should try your question in the Trouble Shooting section.

Is the gear on year starter coming all the way out to the end of nose..if not the shims will help by allowing more space for the gear engage on flywheel.

i recently had this problem, I replaced the flywheel, it was in pretty bad condition. I also picked up a new high torque mini starter. No more problems. Also check to make sure your battery is in very good cond.

Search the site they have many topics regarding this issue.

good luck and welcome to the site:thumbsup:
