I tried this in the tranny section, and thought I would see if there are any ideas in here thanks

my brothers chevy truck (v6 auto tranny 1993 or so) is having problems shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, it will rev to the redline or there abouts and still not shift, and then if you let it come back down a bit it will shift about 4000rpm. All the other shifts happen real nice and smooth. The level seems ok, I added a little bit. Any ideas what might cause this? When it does shift, it happens fine, the actual shift, but it just takes awhile before it thinks it needs to shift.
thanks

You don't say which transmission, but the symptom is similar to a bad modulator valve or vacuum hose to the modulator.

I'm not really sure what the exact tranny is, I know its a four speed from 1992 (not 1993 like I said at first) I think that means maybe the 4L60-e ?? I don't really know, Could it be a problem with the TV cable. Thanks

I agree that this is probably the vacumme line or modulator, not the tv cable. the tv cable handles your downshift when you accelerate hard

Ok thanks, the TV cable is about the only thing I can deal with so that is why I asked.
How much to get it fixed do you think? or is it something not to hard and a amateur can do? another thing, this truck is kind of on its last legs anyway would a bottle of that tranny fix stuff bandaid the problem for a month or two? until a replacement can be found? thanks

"4L60E / 4L80E
Common problems are: Check engine light comes on. The transmission shifts erratically, slips or does not shift at all.

These problems can be caused when the external sensors on the vehicle go bad. The input and output speed sensors, throttle position sensor or vehicle speed sensors need to be checked. Always run a scanner first to see if a sensor is causing your problem.
The 4L60E transmission also has a problem with a hard 1-2 shift when hot, and a 1870 code."

This is almost exactly what it feels like it is doing, so my next question is, how hard are these two sensors to change? Or how much would you think it should cost to have them changed?

thanks for the help, even if we end up taking it to shop I really like to know whats going on so I don't get taken on stuff.
thanks
