: '72 three door suburban

So, i pulled up to my buddy's house the other day and his neighbor was cleaning up his father in laws '72 suburban. He had a for sale sign in the window. so, having interest in MANY old vehicles, i walked over and started talking with him about it. It has a 400/th400, 2wd, 12 bolt, and im assuming 3/4 ton because of the eight lug wheels. It was pretty clean with original head liner and most of the original interior. lots of stupid gadgets screwed into the dash. CB, about half a dozen guages that didn't work and what-not. over all in pretty impresive condition. lots of mouse terds under the hood but ran nicely. Has 200k miles and claims that it was rebuilt 70k ago. So, my question is, what would you say that it is worth? very ballpark, as i know you dont have a really good mental picture of it. He says that he looked it up and it books for 31k:yes: he said that because of the state of the economy he would sell it for 20k. This was about 10-15k off of what i thought that it would be worth. Whatcha guys think? are these things really selling for this much for driver quality?

OH Yea, Its worth at least 25K

Assuming there is a 20k cash somewhere in the truck.

Show quality, I'd say $15k... as you described, $5-7k

Just my opinion, but I don't follow them too closely.

I personally would think 5 to 6k would be tops for a nice one. The 31k is not a realistic number. Even if it was frame off it wouldn't bring that here nor anywhere close. What you described sounds like 2500.

If it will take kindly to a coat of wax and detail job, 6000. Otherwise, 5 grand MAX. If he scoffs, tell him to call you if it is still for sale in a few weeks.

Hmmm, I guess my 1966 Suburban is worth about $35.000 then....

Is B-J fever reported in the area or is he the first case?

The guy is dreaming. Not too many original 402 suburbans out there but I'd say around 5k for a decent driver.

Around 5K, I rather spend a little more C 10 Short Bed.

WOW around here mostly cause of lack of demand a sub goes for 1000-2500 depending on year and condition.

See, this is what i was thinking as well. I would have happily handed him 5k, he might have talked me out of six. but he thought that he was doing the world a favor at 20k.... i knew that with his asking price be 4X what i was willing, we would not be making any headway. I told him good luck with the sale and left. Maybe ill go give him an offer in a few months if its still there.

Truck and Suburbans are littering car lots all over the nation, if the guy is lucky he might sell for $3,500.

This is what I'd do if your really interested but not set on pay a ridiculous amount.
Print off a bunch of pictures of the same year vehicle from the Internet. Give him a reasonable offer will your name and phone number. If he refuses start panning through your pictures and say "Next" out loud and walk off...

2-3k...we used to abuse the crap out of one of those when I was on a surveying crew. most of them were used for work vehicles and abused as such....

This is a typical avg price around here. Anyone ever seen one that wasn't a 3 door (68-72)?

I own a '72 Sub...1/2 ton, 402/auto, front & rear a/c, original tilt & bucket rig, 2nd & 3rd seats, original Protect-o-Plate, everything there & original as it was in '72...was my daily driver for a year or so. I gave a whopping $3500 for it...

That guy either had a comma or a zero in the wrong place, or he's sadly mistaken...

[BTW: all of the '68-'72 Subs were 3 door until the '73 model year...]

WOW! Maybe I should go pull my 68 suburban out of the trees. Or maybe not...it's worth more to me as a place to keep my spare Chevelle parts dry :D.

Terry your 2 pics don't prove that they are not 3 door rigs. The missing door is on the driver's side of the burb:

They don't count the doors on the back of the rig.

On a "push truck", back in the day, I pinstriped a door gap and added a handle on the left side :D

Caused lots of strange reactions from people trying to "jump in"...

I have always heard it was because GM was thinking safety-wise, that all passengers enter/egress to the curb [away from traffic] via the passenger side doors. That brings up a good point, though, in that a *lot* of the Sub parts are specific to the Subs themselves...doors are different, driver's rear door panel (no hole for door handle), dash cluster (if optioned with rear air), etc, etc...

Les: how about some pictures of your dad's old Sub?

Vans still only have swing doors on the passenger side right? Seemed to be the norm, and still does for vans, right?

Here's a picture of my Sub right after I got it...btw, a local film maker has had it for a few days using it in his film...it's the main character's ride, and is almost a character in itself...

Nice Jimmy-Burb!
You've gotta lose those mirrors before you hurt someone!!
Find a 67-68 slant back hood, too - they look much better, IMHO.

LOL...those are the original mirrors! The original owner had it set up to tow occasionally...still has the original dealer installed hitch, as well as the Delco "Comfort-Ride" air shocks (along with the receipts for parts/labor!)...
