Does anyone know where to get the emblem that goes on a 68 SS 396 steering wheel?

Thanks,

Ted

Best shot would be a wanted ad here in the free classifieds www.chevelles.com/classifieds (http://www.chevelles.com/classifieds) or keep an eye on Ebay. Not reproduced yet from what I have seen.

A quick search on Ebay found this:
Emblem (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-CAMARO-CHEVELLE-SS396-STEERING-WHEEL-EMBLEM_W0QQitemZ350118538812QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMot ors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item350118538 812&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A727|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318)

But it is a gamble.......

Thanks Moderator. You have confirmed what I thought would be the situation. I will keep my eye out at swap meets as well.

Again Thanks,

Ted

There were 2 different emblems used on the 68 SS cars. The early built cars used the SS emblems while the later built cars used the SS396 emblems. Both are reproduced but the reproduction ones are stick-on and do not have the 2 pins on the back. I have some original emblems of both types.

I thought it was the other way around with the emblems, where early cars got the SS396.

You are correct. I got it backwards. SS396 for early cars and SS for late ones.
James

BTW, there were 10 different emblems used on the 1968 deluxe steering wheel. Can anyone name them?

Welcome!

not repo'd. You'll have to find one at a swap meet. As mentioned the want ads would be a good place to start.

what's the build date on your car?

Didn't the Concours have it's own emblem that was different from the Malibu? I can't remember what it looked like.

How about the 70 emblem? Everyone sells the 69 version but I haven't found a 70.

How do you tell which it should be? Is there a build month where the change occured?

Thanks,
Ted

Researching as much printed material on the subject that you can find (assembly manuals, old parts catalogs and parts history books, pics and ads in magazines, etc.), looking at as many cars as you can, and talking with the guys on this site works for me.

According to the Chevy Parts History book, the 3925149 emblem was replaced by part #3925881 in January, 1968.
The assembly manual shows a revision dated 8-14-67 from an unreadable number to the -881.
Les Saville's late December-built Kansas car has the SS396 emblem.
It comes down to how many of the early emblems were made and released to the assembly plants, how many were warehoused by the parts distribution centers, and how many cars were built before the old parts were used up. The consensus for the emblems and SS396 marker bezels is the newer styles arrived in late January, early February.
IMO, your car is a little late for the early emblems and marker bezels, but I've been wrong before.:clonk:

James, do you know about the #3925195 emblem that's shown in the assy manual and parts books for the Concours wagon and sport sedan models??

Interesting. My (03C) 3rd week of March Baltimore built car has the SS396 emblem.

Bill, the ones I listed are the only ones I have even seen until Geno posted the picture of his. Is Geno's the one you are talking about. I thought I had them all. Guess I'll have to look for one of those now.

Since my side marker bezels are 396 I agree with the rest of you on the steering wheel emblem being the SS version. Now I just need to keep my eye out for a nice one in a swap meet.

Thanks for all the information. You guys have been a great help.

I looked closely at a '68 Concours at a show in Tulsa, but I can't remember what the emblem looked like. I bet GENO's car has the emblem I was referring to.
I saw the part number listed in the assy manual for the 13735-835 series which is the Concours.
Thanks for the pic & info Geno!
