I have xp pro and when I try to boot into safe mode I get "a video driver failed to initialize" problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.. any help?

Do you have a Windows XP install CD ?
If you do ,try a repair install :

I did try a install but it asks for a password

I'm talking about a repair install ,not a regular install.
Read the link and boot from the XP disk.
