My son's 72 El Camino has a problem with stalling over the past few weeks. It dies and won't start for a few minutes. Seems like it is not getting spark. It happens more frequently now and happened last night and he brought it home and I went to check it out. I started up and backed out of the driveway and it died and would just crank over but seemed like it had no spark. I pulled the air cleaner and could see it was getting gas. After a few minutes it did start. i didn't get a chance to pull a plug and check for spark.
Over the last few weeks I have put on a new fuel filter, ( clear so we could see it flowing fuel)a new fuel pump, new spark plugs and also new distributor cap and rotor. I have checked the timing and seems fine.
It has an after market electronic pick up in place of the points. Can this or the coil be going out? The car runs great for the most part and idles fine. I should also note it only happens while the transmission is in gear.
At first the car would stall and start right back up , but now it seems to need a few minutes to restart. It is a 327 with a Edelbrock 1406 carb. Also a 350 auto trans. I have removed the carb to inspect it and seems clean and not the problem. Thanks for any help. RichF

Be SURE you have a good ground between the engine and chassis/body and "aftermarket electronic pick up". Only other thought would be that the same 'pick up' is heat sensitive and failing. If this is a Pertronix, one trick is to apply heat soak compound to the underside of the module before mounting. This transfers the electronics generated heat out to the breaker plate.

Thanks for the reply. After reading as much as I could about pertronix modules I decided to replace it and see what happens. It is about 4 1/2 years old and people tell me they can flake out with problems like I am seeing. After removing it I found out it is a "ignitor" module. I replaced it with an "ignitor 2". We will see what happens now. Pretty expensive unit. RichF

Don't know if you noticed or not but, a 'feature' of some of the Pertronix is that "to ease starting" you must turn the key to ON, wait 5 seconds for the module to 'charge' then crank. If you just get in and start cranking, it takes much longer for the first spart to occur. (I had one in my Vette) it drove me nuts till I read this somewhere.

The 5 second delay doesn't seem to apply to this unit. We have been driving it all over and no problems yet. I hope it is fixed. RichF

Just a follow up. Car has not stalled again.
Looks like it is fixed. RichF
