The 305 in my '82 El Camino has a slight miss from idle through exceleration. I've changed the distributor cap, the plugs and the rotor. The car also has a strong, rich oil/gas smell and it eats gas like it cost .25 cents.
Is my problem electrical, vacumm, carberation, or all the above?

Probably just needs a proper tune. If it will idle, can you "kill" it with idle mixture screws. If you can, the carb may be OK. If you do have all new parts, if it has a points distributor, I'd first set the dwell to 30, then the timing to spec. Set idle to about 800 rpm, then each idle mixture for best vacuum, then set proper idle speed last. Make sure the vacuum advance is working, this will help mileage. This should get you started.

D1 - I'll change the coil and plug wires this week. If the problem persist I'll dig into the carb and vacuum.

I took the El Camino to my mechanic and he says the carb is not stock and does not communicate with the onboard computer. The distributor is not connected to the computer, and all the sensors have been by-passed. Looks like I have more work (money to spend) than I thought.
