Hi everyone I have a little problem, I have a 427 with a holly 850 DP. I have a few problems; first I have a pop coming from my exhaust at low RPM (below 2300 rpm). The second problem is I can't get it to idle. The third is I have no idea what to set the timing at.

At the end of last year I was having trouble with the idle as well. I figured that it was the power valve so I had the complete carb rebuilt. This obveisly didn't solve the problem. The car has been sitting all winter in a heated garage I don't know it that has anything to do with it but I know for sure that it was not popping at the end of last year.

maybe check your fuel filter. it is a small thing, but can make things act funny if it is clogged.

I would try about 6-8 deg. initial timming to start and make sure everything is ok with the valve train, springs, rockers, pushrods, valve adjustment, ect. Check float adjustment.
Use a vac guage and adjust your idle mixture screws to max vac reading. If you still can't get it, find out what size jets are in it and post back for some opinions on proper sizes .

It sounds like this could be the cause and effect of the very same problem: The timing isn't set correctly. Try to set the timing as Turbo suggested, I don't have a clue where the timing should be on that engine but around 6 degrees should be a good baseline. Change a couple of degrees up and down and see what happens. That's the only way I know of, setting it by the book has never worked for me.
