: 04-06 GTO brakes.. your thoughts..
BowtieAaron Feb 17th, 09, 8:47 AM i might be able to pick up a set of low low milege 04 gto brakes from a friend who is going with 06 brakes.
will these work or be similar to the C5 set up?
perticulary the calipers for front and rear.
i can get them for next to nothing, which is the reason i am asking.
anyone have any insite on them, that would be great.
thanks

tunedbytad Feb 17th, 09, 12:17 PM I have a set on the bench I was going to check if they fit on the AFX setup.
But I have not had time since I'm doing the 12-bolt with coil overs and brakes....
I belive but am not 100% the caliper itself is the same PBR caliper the C5 uses.
The bracket that mounts the caliper to the spindle is WAY WAY different!
BowtieAaron Feb 17th, 09, 12:48 PM would the calipers work with a c5 bracket?
how about putting them on a 4th gen fcar? would they work on there, or too much hassle?
probably still better off going with c5/ls1 package on both my fcar and chevelle.
thanks

camcojb Feb 17th, 09, 12:54 PM I do not know as far as fitment, but there is a reason he's upgrading to 05/06 brakes; the 04's are not very good. That's why GM changed them in 05 to a much better setup.
If the price is right that's one thing, just realize they only used them for that one year for a reason.

BowtieAaron Feb 17th, 09, 1:07 PM very good point.

Jody that might be a bit harsh....
How about the car weighs 4000 pounds and they put more power in it in 05-06' than in 04'.
To me the 04' GTOs stop just fine.

harsh or not, when I had my 05 it was a constant topic on the GTO boards. Do a search, the results will be many many pages of people who were very upset with the braking ability. I never owned an 04, my 05 was fine, but this came up often. 50 extra hp shouldn't require a completely different braking system.
Most Chevelles weigh close the the GTO, some even more, so it was a fair comparison to me. Didn't mean to offend anyone, just wanted him to know that many 04 GTO owners did not like the stock brakes, and it was very popular to upgrade to later years or aftermarket.

Carnutz70 Feb 18th, 09, 10:26 AM The 04 GTO sstuff is way different than C5 stuff, the rotors are smaler and have a huge offset...
I would think C5 stuff would be more economic...
novaderrik Feb 18th, 09, 2:41 PM is the bolt pattern close enough to work on an older GM car?
i've read that they fit, and i've read that they don't.
BowtieAaron Feb 18th, 09, 2:47 PM the bolt pattern is the same. but i think its metric.
i am not too sure, the parts are still on his car, and my front end is still off.. so no testing.
maybe some of this could work on rear? idk, its a new thought, not saying i want to do it, or will, but a brainstorm.

John_R Feb 27th, 09, 10:51 PM FWIW, I have an 06 GTO and I think they are barely adequate for the car's weight, from any sort of performance standpoint, so I don't think I would want to have anything smaller on it (i.e. 2004). Not saying they're "bad" and they do the job, but there are a lot of other choices out there.
