: Power steering from a Jeep 93-98
4strokeforce Feb 17th, 09, 5:06 AM I'm going to convert my manual steering to power steering. From threads on the site I've seen that the Jeep box conversion is good. I think I've found a box know that will fit my Camino -69. The owner says it's from a Jeep Grand Cherokee -93.
Can you guys confirm this is the right power steering for my car.
Thanks!

OLDED Feb 17th, 09, 1:19 PM Looks like the right one to me, if it is infact from a 93, it will work. reuse your A-body pitman arm - it slides right onto the splines after you take off the Jeep one. I borrowed the pitman arm puller from Autozone, and it was a tough removal to get it started coming off. It actually looks pretty dry for a 15 year old part. You will love the difference
72ElCamino Feb 17th, 09, 1:43 PM I thought I read that you needed a power steering box pitman arm from your el camino, not the manual steering pitman arm. Anyways I am looking the same thing after hearing everyone talking them up. Let me know how it goes!

Yes......you need a power steering arm from a Chevelle/Elco, etc. I did this upgrade and would never go back to stock box. I almost hate driving the Chevelle now.............it still has the stock 71 power steering in it.
As far as the puller goes. It worked great getting the arm off of the Elco's 37 year old box, but wouldn't budge the one off the 13 year old Jeep one:angry:. I had to use grinder with a cut off wheel to weaken the arm.
4strokeforce Feb 17th, 09, 3:56 PM Thanks for good answers. The box is ordered now.
I've been told, when you change from manual to power steering you need to change the pitman arm, even if the box is from a Jeep. I'll tell you 72ElCamino how it goes.
The problem now is to find out which steering pump and brackets that will fit my car. I've an old 265 -55 engine in a Camino -69. I wonder which models and years that will fit with my engine?

wow, so its a big difference, i have stock power sterring in my 70 el camino, what sort of difference would be seen from that to the jeep box?

There are a ton of threads on it. I have probably 3 or 4 bookmarked from this site. Apparently it doesnt have to do with the steering radius necessarily, but the road feel. It will give you 2.75 turns lock to lock, But it also has a bigger "T-Bar". The bigger "T-Bar" seems to be what gives you the road feel. I think I read a chevelle has a .65 sized one while the grand cherokee has a .95?
Anyways I'm debating on doing it as well but i havn't heard one bad thing from anyone who has done the swap.
Do you guys think I can turn in my el camino steering box as a core for a grand cherokee one?
Matt
steve_sutherland Feb 17th, 09, 7:36 PM thanks i'll look into it more

Never thought of that?
They do look alike.
Any sloppy feel you have from the stock box is completely gone with this upgrade.
OLDED Feb 18th, 09, 9:59 AM You'll likely get more for the stock box on E-Bay than as a core.
