: Should "gasket" between tail light housing be visible on a 68?
gibbons Feb 17th, 09, 12:04 AM I had to remove the tail light housings from my 68 to put in LED tail lights. There was a "gasket" between the body and housing, but the metal actually butted against together. There was a bunch of wax and buffing compound down in the crack, it will be nice to clean that out. Anyway... to look right, should there be some gasket showing between the two?
Thanks!
BB68 Feb 17th, 09, 10:23 PM I dont think so, not positive.
Ark68SS Feb 18th, 09, 11:26 AM Nope, no gasket. What you're seeing is probably non-hardening seam sealer. Be sure to put some dum-dum around the studs or water will leak into the trunk through them. BTDT.

Bill, I believe I took gaskets out of my car.. They were not visible from the outside, more for the bolt holes I think...

Ark68SS Feb 19th, 09, 4:53 PM The gasket in this ebay ad and the one between the lens and bezel were only ones on my car. Did you have another/different one on yours??

I don't know about '68's but my '69's also have a "7" shaped gasket between the tail light housing and body. It doesn't extend to the outer seam and isn't visible. This is in addition to the oval shaped gasket.

Here is a pic of mine.. It took a while to find them... I do see a hint of red paint on the edges is "some" areas but I never recall seeing them poke through when installed.. I also searched my Assembly Manual and could not find the tail light housing area...

Ark68SS Feb 19th, 09, 9:42 PM Well, crap, I guess I'll have to take the car apart again & install those gaskets.:( I guess the PO didn't put them back when he had the car painted. I've had the extensions off to replace the lenses and that's when I saw the seam sealer. I needed something to do this weekend besides cut trees.:D
The dang assy manual won't show anything behind the firewall as far as body parts; no door, trunk, quarters or rear end, other than wiring and lighting. That was all done in the Fisher plant before it got to final assembly. What we need is a Fisher Body assembly manual (if they had any) for that kind of stuff.

I'm guessing if a car rarely sees rain it will function just fine without them. They may just be there to eliminate squeaks. Bill, we won't tell anybody if you don't.:D

Note to self, voting at CB09: Lessenberry's 68 doesn't have seals in tail light housings. Deduct points :p
gibbons Feb 20th, 09, 2:03 PM Mine has the lucky 7 gaskets, the edges are squished but they weren't visible. I will leave them in and re-good the nuts on the inside.
