My tail panel is rusted thru where it is welded to the trunk floor metal (under the seam sealer) . The 3 piece trunk floor "kit" I have does not extend all the way into this tail panel area. I see they sell replacement tail panels, but I don't see this extended piece of the trunk floor listed for the '66.
Does anyone know if this extended trunk floor piece is available, or is there another application part I can modify to work in this area?

One piece full trunk floors are available now for 66, or so I've been told. I can't say if it will solve the problem but here's an example (not an endorsement):

Thanx for the reply's. The Ground Up parts are not the piece I am looking for...close, but not it. The one piece trunk does look in the pix that it would fit the bill, but I'm way past the point of buying another trunk floor.
I'm thinking the rust I see here on my 66 has got to be common on other 66 cars who had water leaking into their trunk too.
Anybody else had to deal with this issue?

I had to fabricate some sheetmetal across the back of the tail panel for this issue...

Thanx for the input. I was afraid that improvising was going to be the answer, but now that I know that: full steam ahead! (I didn't want to take the effort to make this piece if it was available somewhere I haven't heard about).
Hey JJ67SS; nice pictures....nice project. Your tackling yours just as I am going to do mine!

So after working on this today, I see I'm going to be better off buying the tail panel. Only the bottom edge of mine is rusty, so I'm contemplating just cutting off the bad and cutting out the match from the repo tail panel instead of replacing the whole tail panel. I'm thinking this will be less invasive on the car than replacing the whole original panel with the Asia panel.
Those of your who have replaced the whole panel with the Asia panel......were you happy with the fit, or is it "slightly off" as many of the Asia panels can be?

I got my tail panel from GoodMark Industries and it fit well. Though only the bottom of it was pretty well gone - I decided to tear out ALL of the old tail panel and put in the new.
