OK i feel that my timming is good for a starting
point, and i got it where the motor will run smooth after it warms up, and it will run nice and idle well with the manual choke ;) , i feel that its not running rich at idle, when i hit the gas it revs. up there is no off idle stumble, but it
will start to run rich with ever i hit of the throttle , you can see and smell it in the exhaust.but if i let it idle and burn the gas off it ok , but the when ever i hit the gas its back to rich exhaust ,it dosn't back fire or run ruff?
at idle 10 hg of vac. in gear 8-9 hg of vac stock 850 holley is the carb , i got the tran slot in the carb looking like a tiny square any info needed please ask

Possible power valve number is too high, it should be about 1/2 of the idle vacuum number. If it is idling at 9 inches, you need a power valve of 4.5.

Robert,I don't beleive its the power valve,if it were it would come into play at idle not when you rev the engine. You said you could smell and see it what are you seeing as far as the exhaust. If it is rich usually you will see almost black smoke from the exhaust. If the smoke is blue you could be sucking oil from the lifter valley.

Robert,

your car needs more gas when you hit the throttle and you're driving it than when you hit the throttle and it's idling. So it's possible everything is fine.

However, it's also possible you are fine at idle and running too rich when cruising. If that's the case, the 2 main possibilities are the power valve or your jetting. You should check that your power valve setting is not closer than 2 from your "normal" driving vacuum reading. If your normal cruising vacuum is 10, for example, your power valve should be an 8 or lower. I can't say what jets you SHOULD have, you'll need to analyze your exhaust or check your plugs for that. As a baseline, you shouldn't be that far from how the carb is set at Holley.

Carbs are funny to mess with - you should only make 1 change, then drive it to see the impact of that change alone.

I'd also recommend you go to Holley's website to get a good understanding of how their carbs work - it's very helpful.

Good luck!
