GM part# was 3883986 or 3904359 - .461/.481 lift 214/218 @ .050 -LC 115.

Forgot to add that it's the same cam for L34, L36, L68, LS5.

Iam Putting together a real nice 427 .040 over,10-10 forged crane, resized connecting rods, decking the block, boring and honing with a deck plate, having it balanced, new pistons with a small bump that will be machined down to get the compression ratio somewhere between 9 to 9.5. the heads are an early set of oval port that have hard seats, stainless values, bronze guides, and had ground to get them square. I was looking for a mild cam that would have a small lope and add a few horse power. Planning on using pump gas 91 octane and street driving the car. billy 2

CC's 280 Magnum will do you nicely.

But personally, I'd install their 282S solid lifter cam b/c a 427 will like to rpm!

Note, nothing fancy and both should make darn good street engine cams, imho.

You want SOTA, then install a VooDoo or call UDHarold here for a Harold spec'd cam.

And if you call, please say hello from ol' pdq67 for me.

Thanks,

Paul suggests some nic cams but this crane is a great perf in 396/420/427 bbc too,its considerably hotter then the stock 427/390hp cam but will idle good and have good idle vacuum at approx 14-15" in a 427 aslong as you run the 18-20 deg base timing that cam likes along with 18 mech in dist in by 2800-3k rpm for 36-38 total by 2800rpms along with vac adv too with 14 deg max & most stocke vac adv are 20 or more deg timing so keep in mind you need to address that too when running a perf cam.

Cranes single pattern 284h hyd flat tappet with 228/228 deg dur @.05,.544/.544 lift,112 deg lsa and it will really wake up a stock type 427 like yours.

Its a very good perf cam for a very reasonable price, yes some other cams in same perf lvl may put out a few more hp but thats at almost 2x the price of this inexpensive single pattern cam & lifter kit.

I have run this cam in the smaller bbc's like in mentioned above over the yrs with very good results with auto & or man trans with 307/331/342/373 gear.

Make sure to run rec springs/retainers too.

Billy,a good friend of mine has a 68 SS427 Impala and we used a Comp 268XE for it when the motor was rebuilt. Has a little lope and pulls nicely. its a heavy car with 3.31 gears too.
Needless to say,he was very happy with the choice.

Right!

I too think the old Crane 284/228 cam is a good one.

I also like Crane's old 278/222/290/234, 114/109, .529"/.525" hy-cam too.

Thanks for all information on the cams. I was hoping to get a little over 425hp with the engine rebuild. I think that's possible and still have the engine idle at the stop lights.

Thanks billy 2

Billy,

Please do yourself a favor and install the good old CC 282S in her b/c a 427 will like to rpm and a solid lifter cam will allow it.

I'm taking mild street manners that will still allow kicking her in the as* up top for *****'s and grins and you will see what I mean if you do drive it really like's to be driven!!

You will see and even the old 282S is mild here but it will rpm b/c it is a solid lifter cam!

And if you want a grunt SOTA solid lifer cam, install this one that I have in my bedroom closet that UDHarold created for me!!

278/249/161, 110/106, .618" gross lift and it need's .018" lash on both sides!

He, He!! Check it out against CC's great old 288AR solid street roller and you will see what I'm talking about!

What do you think of a roller cam ??? That should free up a few hp.

I'm not going there b/c that's why I bugged UDHarold to create this solid lifter cam for me.

Billy, I am a fan of hyd rollers for big block street motors that will be ran up to about 5800-6000. No question, there are HP and torque gains available. From there, it's a question of what do you want in terms of driveability. Assuming your heads will be be prepped to handle some decent lift, there are a lot of cam profiles availble both off the shelf (or custom). The absolute smallest I would run in a 427.040 (434"??) would be something like the Crane 286 Powermax Hyd roller (226/234, .587/.610, 112LSA). Or even their next step up which is a 230/236, .610/.610, 112LSA. The Lunati VooDoo 231/239, .600/.600 on 110LSA would be a real good choice in a hyd roller. There are also some mid .500's lift cams off the shelf that would work well. Comp has a "mild" Marine grind XM284HR that is 284/290, 230/236, .547/.547, 112LSA. Another cam in their lineup that works decent in a mild street car is their Magnum 280HR, 280/280, 224/224, .566/.566, 110LSA. This one works well in a lower compression street motor. Still has some rump at idle and a lot of torque. I run a custom ground CamMotion in my current 454.070 motor that is 233/236, .600/.610, 112LSA, installed at 107ICL. It is very mild in a 469" motor, would work in 434" oval port real nice. You have a lot of choices. Don't be afraid to step it up a little though. Mid 220's on a 110LSA, 230 ish on a 112LSA will all have some lope at idle, yet maintain decent vacuum. That 231/239 VooDoo is on a 110LSA. It will still idle decent due to the shorter seat timing, but it is also noisy.
