: Car keeps on dying

Like a dumb a$$ I ran out of gas the other day (having fun and not watching a relatively inaccurate gauge is no good) After this mistake is when problems started occuring. Before this event the car was running perfect.

After 3 trips to the gas station and 5 gallons in it, the car wouldn't start for its life. It was having such a hard time starting. Finally I gave it some time and it was still rough turning over. Once it got started I had to rev it really high to keep it from dying. I finally got it to a gas station an filled up the rest of the tank. I thought that this would be the end of my worries. At this point I thought that my car had experienced vapor lock, the temperature was in the 70's and earlier I was running around with open headers, plus I still have the mechanical fuel pump on the car.

After getting fully gassed up it seemed to run fine but right around 30-40 mph it begin to stumble upon itself and not go into 3rd gear, I would then let up off the gas and then it would die. This happened at least 4 or 5 times on my adventure home. Is this still remenants of my potential vapor lock?

I finally got it on the highway and it got into 3rd gear fine and didn't die. I was doing 65 and got home fine..........confused at this point but I got home and I was convinced that this just happened because of the heat and lack of fuel that the car saw.

I didn't drive the car for a day and then I took it out yesterday and it died on me twice. Same thing as above, right around 30 or 40 mph I would let up off the gas rather abruptly and the car would die.

The car still has vacuum advance on it. Could this be caused by too much timing? Is this some type of issue with the fuel system I need to work out? Perhaps the fuel filter?

Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Jason

Your car probably sucked something out of the bottom of the tank and got dirt or other crud in the carb.

I agree probably dirt in the idle circuit, from running low on gas.Every time you let off the gas it returns to idle circuit and stalls. graemlins/waving.gif

Seems like you have problems above the idle circuit. Check for restriction anywhere, maybe fuel filter. I have had water in the gas plenty of times and it acts just like that. Maybe still water in the carb. Add some ?"water additive"? and or flip the carb over to drain. Not sure of which carb but some are sensitive to being upside down, I don't think you'll have a problem. Connect some fuel line tee'd to a psi gage and a clear filter near the carb so you can watch the flow.
