I'm pretty exciting about picking up my 1967 Chevelle 4 door wagon next week. Its totally stock with the 283 and power glide transmission. I would like to keep it all original for the most part except for the transmission. I would like to put a Turbo 400 in it and use it to tow my 1967 SS 396 to car shows with it, I think that would look pretty cool. However I have always been a 4 speed guy and have no idea what to look for in a Turbo 400. I understand that I have to find one with a Short Tail shaft, That's all I know and have no idea if the one's I've looked at out of a truck are the same as the one's out of a car. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Thanks

I put a 396 and TH400 in my '66 Malibu wagon...replacing the originally equipped 327 w/PG.
Easy to find a short tail TH400...but you will have to shorten the original driveshaft about 1.5". Also had to drill holes in the frame for the crossmember.
Not a difficult install...
But, a TH350 swap is easier yet...less HP required and a direct swap in. Plus a well prepped TH350 would do equallly well in a towing application.

Great to hear about another '67 wagon coming together!
I wish I could help ya with the trans swap, but I went with a T56 6-speed in mine!
Like Bill says, the T350 is a bolt-in, and the T400 is not a tough upgrade.
If there's anything I can help you with regarding a '67 wagon, just ask!

Cool, Thanks Guys. I'm looking forward to making my Wagon a nice ride. I was thinking about making it a 4 speed, Still not sure, I have 3 rebuilt muncie 4 speeds. It would nice to have bucket seat, Consol and 4 speed.

what's a reasonable price for a rebuilt turbo 400? I found a few and they seem fairly cheap for being rebuilt, $375 a good deal? It includes yolk and torque converter

My guess at that price.....you could buy it, tell them to keep the converter. Then pull ir down and inspect it and upgrade a few things.
