: Alternator belt rubs power steering pump
1967 Bodyoff Feb 13th, 09, 8:50 PM I am stumped and don't know what to do. I have a 67 small block with power steering (no A/C). After swapping motors the alternator belt is contacting the power steering pump. I reused the exhaust manifolds and all the brackets and pulleys from the factory 283. I am not sure what year the new engine or heads are, but it appears that the exhaust manifold mounts farther reward on the new engine, but I am not sure if GM ever made any changes to this area? All the bracketry is pretty straight forward as the bottom alternator bracket bolts to the top of the exhaust manifold. There isn't any adjustment in this area so I don't know what is wrong. I am welcome to any suggestions.
Thanks

sassy 67 Feb 14th, 09, 12:04 PM Make sure your alternator is in front of your top alternator adjustment bracket and not behind it. I had the same problem and had the alternator installed incorrectly, behind the bracket, this tends to pull the belt back toward the power steering pump, now I have clearence.

Bingo! Exactly what I thought as soon as I read the title of the post.
1967 Bodyoff Feb 14th, 09, 6:06 PM The alternator is in front of the upper bracket. I will try and post some pictures tomorrow. I appreciate the help.
1967 Bodyoff Feb 21st, 09, 10:20 PM Alright, I finally got the casting number from the heads which is 376450. I also noticed that the driver side front head had accessorie mounting holes in it. After a quich search on ebay I found that there are factory alternator brackets that use thes mounting holes. I have used my 67 exhaust manifolds and brackets but when I put a strait edge accross the water pump pully to the alternator pully the alternator is siting 3/16 of an inch reward. I guess that I need to purchas the correct brackets to match my heads, but I would like to know if anyone knows why if I am using my 67 manifolds and brackets that I am having this rubbing issues. I assume that the exhaust ports moved reward with this head casting?

Exhaust port bolt locations are the same, something else is causing the mis-alignment. Are you sure the upper alt bracket is bolted to the rear of the alt?
1967 Bodyoff Feb 22nd, 09, 10:05 AM The upper alt bracket is bolted to the rear of the alternator. However, I don't understand how this would make a difference as the lower bracket doesn't have any adjustement that would allow the alt to move back? Basically the lower bracket sets the for/aft location of the altenator in a fixed position.
pnugene Feb 22nd, 09, 3:03 PM Any chance your water pump is causing this? Do both motors use the short pump? Another thought, are you now running headers when you previously had factory manifolds? Anything like this that could cause the bracket to not locate in the same position as before? I know it sounds silly, but are you sure the PS pump is installed correctly on it's brackets? Good luck.
