: Barn Find - 70/71 SS

While my father-in-law and I were fourwheeling, he wanted to show me an abandoned farmhouse that is located close to him. We looked around for a while, and I noticed a lot of older cars in the driveway, rotting into the ground. As I was walking back to the 4 wheelers, he said - "Ben, you gotta see this" as he poked his head out of the garage (with the door left unlocked). As I walked in, I was expecting it to be a meth lab, or something of that sort, but come to find a beautiful 70/71 Chevelle SS (sans motor and tranny). It was covered in dust, thick layers of dust, and probably hadn't been drivin for 20+ years. From what I remember, all of the glass and paint looked good, all 4 tires were flat, but I did not look in the interior. But I have to imagine that it would be in half way decent shape.

I asked my FIL to go back to car and get the VIN number from it, so I can get some more information it. As soon as I do, I will be making the owners an offer, but am wondering what price range should I be thinking? I know A LOT depends on A LOT of variables, but assuming they are willing to part with it, does anyone have an idea of what I should tell the wife the car **MAY** cost me??

TIA

Tell her, free, you just have to get her running, which will cost approx. 10k, to start! Sounds like a neat find, see what the vin says.

Yeah, that was going to be my starting point, but I have a hard time imagining that it will be free. Good point on telling her what it is going to take to restore it...maybe that will help with the price staying low, or even free!

Just be honest with her. It will cost you less in the long run.

Never, ever be honest with your wife, tell her what she wants to hear and let it go. Think about it, are you honest with her when she asks "do I look fat in these jeans?" unless you hate sex or you like making your own food and doing your own wash, lie like you never lied before. The bigger the better, make it so big and good and sell it like your life and the life of everyone you know and have ever known, lives are depending on it.
I ask do you hate sex and cars enough to tell your wife the truth?

Some things are better off left alone. My wife and I have a very honest relationship, but if she really knew how much I have in my car I think it would mean trouble for me. She would have leverage if you know what I mean. Maybe I'm wrong here but don't ask don't tell?

Ben, we usually tell people that pictures are needed.
When your FIL goes back to get the VIN, ask him to look at the interior. Does it have a round speedometer or a sweep style? Is the interior nice or a mess?
Try to look under the hood. Look for rust.

My wife knows how much money I have in all my toys and what they are worth. Look at it this way, if something was to happen to you would you want her to sell off your stuff and make 1/2 of what it should sell for?

We always talk about stuff we want to buy and agree on it before we buy it. And when we want to sell something we talk about how much we should ask/take for it.

this forum is amazing...

In another column/thread the topic is a creepy neighbor who was shining a laser pointer out a window at their son and the list tells them they should call 911...

This thread is about telling someone to go TRESPASSING...totally opposite from the other thread...

but its for a CHEVELLE so I say GO FOR IT ! ! !

TAKE A PICTURE ! ! !

Gary if you keep things from your wife, that isn't really a "very honest honest relationship" :noway:

Way to hijack a new guy's thread.

I am thinking going on someones property today and prying into their buildings is a pretty brave manuever. As long as you can explain how you came across the Chevelle being in an enclosed building, what do you have to lose. If it was mine, you would never get your hands on it just for the sake of tresspassing. But good luck and write us if you end up in jail!!

Man, you can't have anything anymore without someone trespassing and snooping on private property. :D

I was thinking of the same thing. Clearly a case of Burglary or if you can cop a plea, Trespassing.

This is perhaps the Stupidest post I have ever read "lying to Your wife " Trespassing " getting shot !!! ! If you cant afford it You don't ask. The smart thing to do would be 1 knock on the door. 2 Knock on the surrounding houses doors to get info !!! 3 Go to the recorder of deeds an get the owner info. Porceed from there. You found it by accident harmless !!! entering a building that isnt yours is a good way to get buried with a backhoe, at least here. Use You your head and you may just get the car , maybe even just for removing all the other junkers. I know Ive got several from real estate co.'s that told me to come get them off the property. lastly you dont need to explore every detail if its cheap !!! is it rusty who cares they all have rust , Doesn't any body have Common Sense Anymore !!! A lot of us have seen a car and gone to get a "peek." It's easy to get caught up in the moment and not think about it.

I always use the half price principal with my wife in regards to car and mountain bike stuff. If you tell her its "free" that gets the "inspector gadget" in her all rowled up... Has worked ok so far - 15 years...ha...sounds like a great find....hop on it quickly....

This is great! I'm loving it! I got a kit at Home Depot and did the tub myself. I also added a cowl hood!
I bought a 69 Chevelle for $50 that was parked behind someone else's barn. The 2 parties didn't even know each other! (Long story!!)
If you get shot, it will not have been in vain...

Ok, tresspassing aside, although not condoned, done is done. Do a property search at the county court house which in many places can be done On-line. This will tell you who owns the land. Ask if them if any of the cars that where in plain view are for sale or if they have others they might be willing to get rid of. It solves the getting shot issue.
