Is it a big job to fix a rear window support lip and panel? not sure how to phrase it. it's pretty rusted out and the trunk hinges that are suppose to be welded to something on top are loose cause it's all rusted out. Does this sound expensive?

rust is just a pain, the more you see the more there is.

I bought this 70 chevelle malibu for $1500. It came with the original build sheet and warranty folder w/ protect-o-plate which is stamped with the vin#. The motor has been rebuilt but interior and dash which still has all the knobs are in excellent cond.. The body as i wrote earlier has rust on the bottom of fenders and end of trunk. Carb has minor problems but i just wish i could get the rust fixed the cheapest and fastest way to get on the road. I would drive it primer till i can afford to get it painted. Part of me wants to bondo and fiberglass for now and replace with metal later. The chevelle has always been my dream car of mine.

Unless you can throw a cheap paint job on yourself and don't mind wasting your time I wouldn't do it. Paint work is expensive and painting over rust as bad as your describing it'll be back in a year and you'll have fix it anyway and paint it again.:noway:

if you have a welder, cutting disc, saw, and a drill at the very least. you could prolly take care of it.

It sounds like your package tray is rusted out. From the exploded assembly drawings, this is a single piece that runs from the back seat support to the trunk. It is the structure which the filler panel between the trunk and glass is welded to. The same as the trunk hinge brackets. From what what I have seen you can either find a doner and cut out and replace, fabricate a new one (portion or all) or cut out the really bad metal and try to weld in supports to simulate the old panel. On my 66 filler panel replacement, it has a new lip for the rear window to sit in, so it is going right over the rusted out portion. Hope this helps.
