So the problem is that when I'm at highway speed my alternator seems to want to put out way too many amps for a split second, it makes my radio shut off then turns right back on. It puts out about 60 amps when it does that, it normally when its charging will do just under 30 or so. I don't think the alternator is the problem I haven't really done a whole lot of diagnosing yet besides just thinking about it. Could this be related to voltage regulator? mine looks like it is the original one, how often do those go out? Or perhaps it is the alternator starting to go out?
thanks for any info

ps its a 70 malibu 350, edelbrock carb, a/c, just rebuilt >3000 mls, I run two electric fans I think they are both rated at like 10amps or 15 something like that

The amount of current (AMPS) the alternator is "putting out" will not cause the problem you are refering to. The charging VOLTAGE, however, can. I would begin by changing the regulator first. It is the regulator which "tells" the alternator how much voltage to generate at any given moment. If you're not concerned about total originality, replace the regulator with a Wells VR715 which is a solid state version of the old AC Delco mechanical regulator. When nounting the Wells regulator, be sure that the mounting "ears" are grounded to the radiator support. Measure the voltage with a VOM across the battery terminals with the car idling. THEN, increase the RPMs. Charging voltage should be around 13.8 volts. 15 volts or higher is TOO high, and 12 volts is TOO low. Check your ground connections also, especially the one to your radio.

one question, where would the ground be if I have installed an after market stereo? Maybe the original ground wire isn't grounded?
thanks

it turned out that when I replaced my alternator a few months ago they gave me one with an internal regulator, so the two were conflicting and finally the external one went out and was charging my battery up to like 15 volts. so I took the old one out and just jumper wired and the alternator and everything works like it supposed to.
thanks
