Maybe you just need a longer belt
How far away can you swing the alternator with the belt off?
how much is 1/2 of adjustment?

I also have a 66 with a big block, (stock) and there is less than 1/2 inch between my alternator and my valve cover measured in a straight line. There is aprox 1 inch from the center of my alternator bolt to the end of the adjustment slot on my bracket. I have a Gates 11A1420 belt. I do not have to take my alternator off to change belts, when the alternator is loose as far as it goes to the valve cover, you should be able to roll the edge of the belt off the alternator pulley. You say you can't loosen the alternator, why is that?

my buddy has same prob with his bb. Only way to go shorter valve covers is to go stock covers. Only way to go stock covers is if top end is not rollerized.
