: The other 383???
Jim Mac Feb 11th, 09, 10:24 PM Sorry it's a mopar question. As i was sitting here checking out craigslist. I found a guy giving away 2 383 mopar shortblocks that are taken a part. along with a spare crank. they are forged cranks. (arent they all?) one is a 68 block the other is suppose to be a 69 block. SO. did I just save this guy a trip to the dump? Does anyone use mopar 383s? I figure its good for trading material, But have no idea what its worth if anything. The balancers, timing covers, dist etc was all included. Like I was saying, I have no idea about mopar or ford stuff for that matter. thanks for any input. jim
BlueSS454 Feb 11th, 09, 10:44 PM Send one my way :D. My Charger was an original 383 car. The 383 HP blocks are kinda sought after by 68-69 B body owners (Charger, Road Runner, GTX, etc..)
Jim Mac Feb 11th, 09, 10:45 PM how do you tell a hp motor vs a boat anchor? I really dont know anything about mopars. jim
cobaltchev67 Feb 11th, 09, 10:52 PM Ask Jim D he would know....he used to race a prostreet looking Duster and also had a 68 or 69 Charger, until he turned to the dark side:yes:
Jim Mac Feb 11th, 09, 11:21 PM I just posted the stamping off the front of the block. If mopars stamp cubic inches, then 1 is a 440 and the other is a 383.
IVe got a 5 gallon bucket of bolts, linkages, brackets. This stuff may as well come from Mars. It sure aint chevy. jim
BlueSS454 Feb 11th, 09, 11:28 PM The CID is cast into the block on each side. It will either be 383, 400, 413, or 440. HP blocks should have forged cranks and 4 BBL carbs if you got the original intake manifolds with all this.
Jim Mac Feb 11th, 09, 11:41 PM no top end. just the forged cranks. (3) 2 blocks
1 says D440 10 19 HP 2
the other is stamped D383 5 13 2 HP
extra set of caps. timing covers, etc. jim
JWagner Feb 12th, 09, 12:15 PM Take a look at the deck height. If I recall, the 383 deck will align with the top of the water pump bosses, and the 440 will be about 5/8 inch taller.
pdq67 Feb 12th, 09, 1:47 PM Imho, the old 4.25" b x 3.38" s= 383 MOPAR is one hell of a good engine!
Next is even better, the 4.34" b x 3.38" s = 400" low deck MOPAR!

Jebchevelle Feb 12th, 09, 2:51 PM no top end. just the forged cranks. (3) 2 blocks
1 says D440 10 19 HP 2
the other is stamped D383 5 13 2 HP
extra set of caps. timing covers, etc. jim
we have a local mopar guy in our club he has a 440 and a 383 both just like you decribed both short blocks he says its always nice to have spare parts as mopar stuff is not as easy to get.
Bryan59EC Feb 12th, 09, 3:22 PM 413-426-440 will have a pad right in front of the valley pan.
361-383 the pad will be closer to the distributor shaft.
all of the pre 68 cranks are forged
