: Value of a 12 bolt
FlameOut Feb 11th, 09, 8:53 PM I have the chance to purchase this 12 bolt (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR4 0%26_trksid%3Dm38.l1313%26_nkw%3D320337726670%26_s acat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&item=320337726670&viewitem=) that didn't meet it's reserve on ebay. I think I can get it for $1450, but am having second thoughts that it is worth that price. One thing in it's favor is that I can pick it up and not have to pay $150+ for shipping
I also might be able to get this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160312918634&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=) for close to that price ($1450) and it also is local, so no shipping charges. The first has new shoes and drums.
Are either of these worth it at that price?
I'm not in a big hurry to purchase a rear, but I've been looking for over a year and can't find anything (other than in this price range) If one of these were casting 3894939, I'd have probably already purchased it
PCB67SS Feb 11th, 09, 10:24 PM Patience.....I think if you sit back a bit longer you can do a lot better for that type of coin.....Have you spoken to Tlowe a member here for pricing and availability? I believe I just seen a freshly powder coated 939 housing go for 560.00 on eBay this last weekend....for the additional 800 plus they are asking for these you could load it with all new guts, axles and brakes.
Green-cars-live-forever Feb 11th, 09, 11:03 PM I've been looking for a while. The first ones been gone through but its not a new posi or new gears. The second one has more "new" stuff the claim that its rust free show condition, this seems to add considerable value.
I saw useable condition posi w/3.31 go for 1150. It looked clean couldnt tell if it was pitted, and it had discs.
I've seen a couple on NH craiglist sell for 1350 these were 3.73 posi and no one knew when last they were gone through. Also non posi for 700 sold in a week.
MA craigslist there was one fully rebuilt with 3.42 posi it went for asking price 1500. This one sold inside of a week.
I ended up paying 910 + 100 shipping for a really nice not completely rust free, but completely non pitted unit with new brakes that came from a running vehicle and a leaky pinion seal.
Most of what I've seen in the neighborhood of 800 dollars or less have been victimized by the addition of leaf spring perches or painted purple.
There is a couple of users here that can give you quotes, I had recieved quotes from "Tlowe" and one from "Monza-z".
I think if you end up with a trouble free rear end that someone just went through for 1450 you get to save yourself a bunch of time and certainly didnt get taken... particularly the second one.
bcice Feb 12th, 09, 12:46 AM Be patient and keep your eyes and ears open Bill. this is the second one I have bought for $200 in the last month

69SS3964Spd Feb 12th, 09, 1:28 AM I know Brian(AllOlds) in your second one listed. He is a stand up guy and you can believe what he says and he will back up his stuff! He will also build custom if you want something specific. Even if you do not buy this one, I would recommend him to build one if you do not buy one ready to go!

Here is one that might be worth a call.
FlameOut Feb 12th, 09, 10:58 AM Thanks for the tips. As I said, I'm not desperate yet, so that is in my favor. I would like to get something that I can just drop in and use, but would certainly consider just the '39' housing if I could find one.
2nd2ja Feb 13th, 09, 12:50 PM IMO $1400 ain't a bad deal on a redone 12 Bolt.
Years ago i paid 1500 with new Posi and axles, etc. Damm, wish Ida bought 2 or 3! But there's that dreaded should-coulda-woulda deal again.
cwilks Feb 13th, 09, 1:33 PM I'm amazed at what these complete 12 bolts go for.........and I ride a Harley so I'm familiar with overpriced stuff :D
70chevelle15 Mar 9th, 09, 12:55 AM Yea I found a 12bolt out of a 69 chevelle with a factory posi and 4.11's for only $250, a few months ago, they are out there. I cleaned it out but wasn't bad.

I haven't found one that cheap lately but, years ago I was looking for a posi and gears for my 71 Monte. I was at a swap meet and a guy had a 12 bolt out of a 65 or 66 Impala that he had redone and installed into a 69 Chevy pickup because it was the right width and 5 lug instead of 6. He wrecked the truck shortly after and pulled the rear out. I asked him what it had in it and he said 3.73 posi! That is exactly what I wanted so I asked the hard question about price and to my disbelief he said $100! I bought it fo $90 and took it home took the posi and gears out and had them installed for $125 in my Monte, which already had a 12 bolt rear from the factory, and they are stil in there today and work perfectly!

I'd love to find a deal like that! I'm still looking, but not in a big hurry, so maybe I'll luck out. How would you like to double your money? :D
66CHEVELLE138 Mar 9th, 09, 9:26 PM I gave $400 for my 66 12 bolt at a swap meet, then about another $800 for a new eaton posi, 3.55 gears and all new bearings and set up. I felt I had stole it concidering how hard the narrower 66's are to find. The days of finding them cheap are over really, but every now and then you find someone that doesn't know what they have or just tired of one being in the way. I bought a 68 nova 12 bolt at a scrap yard last summer for 50.00, will never happen again, right place at the right time.
