: Looking to put new rubber on the Elky

Greetings: I want to put new rubber on my 70 SS El Camino (LS5, M22, 3:31) in the spring and am looking for some suggestions. Would like wider rubber on the rear (traction and appearance) but want to maintain the stock 5 spoke SS look. Believe it's currently riding on 14x7 with Goodyear Eagle ST's.

Any suggestions on vendors that manufacture the ss wheel. What have you guys tried that looks good. Sorry but a bit of a novice at this.

Thanks, Dave

how about old school L60 14s on the back? I think summit or jegs carries them. maybe a F70 for the fronts. if your going radials I think 245 60s are about as wide as they get. Jim

I'm tire shopping as well. I was thinking 225/60/15 for the front, and 245/60/15 for the rear.

Mine are 255/60/15 in the rear and 235/60/15 in front on 7 inch rims.

The pic isn't very revealing but they fit with no issues.

I have P275/50R15's on the back of my 70, and P215/50R15's on the front, i like the look,
BFG Radial T/A's on the back and BFG Touring Precept's on the front.

That's good to know. That's certainly the kind of info that I was looking for, I just have no ideas what will work with the stock suspension.

With 15x8 Rally wheels all around I found that 275/60 rear and 225/70 front fit the best. They are close to the same height and gave the car the look I was after.

I like that stance Philip.

As this thread seems to have become quiet, I'm going to take it off on a tangent with this question. When running different tire sizes front and rear, in a posi equipped vehicle, what size are you doing for a spare?

No spare.

Same here no spare. If I am going more then 100 miles from home I just throw a 245/60/15 on a stock steel rim in the back. The front tires are within an inch of the height of the rears so if needed one of the fronts can be moved to the back and the spare put on the front.

on my 70 (the silver one above) i also dont have a spare, and with stock suspension my 275s fit no problem, and i think they looked good IMO

I've decided on 225/60/15 for the front, but am wondering what I can get away with sticking on the rear 15x7.
275/50....? Or is that too much? I'm trying to keep the heights and speedo close.

i did some research here before i did mine last year, i ended up going w/ 15x7 wheels in the front w/ 245/60/15 & 15x8's w/ 275/60/15 rear. BFG t/a's all around. looks awesome and no rubbing or modify for fitment. i just swapped out the small block springs and put in BB springs, yanked the tired 350, put in a fresh 454 a year ago. she now sits proper, level and flat.

I think you are going to be hard pressed to even find 14" tires. Even more so with you being in Canada. I am in Arizona and was looking for some about 3 months ago. Talk about a hassle and a half! No one had them locally or could order them. Was told numerous times how obsolete they were, there was no demand for them, how everyone is running 16 inch plus tire sizes now etc etc. I am sure you could probably mail order some if you dont mind paying the shipping charges. Then you have to worry about if they are really what you wanted and fit how you liked. Do you want to go thru the hassle of having to ship them back?

Super clean El Camino you have there! My compliments! :) Any issues turning and rubbing the fender with those big tires on the front?

i dont know about Philips car there, but i do know of a lot of 70 el caminos with up to 275's on the front without any rubbing issues on stock suspension

What some reading is leading me to believe is that with a 15x7 rim, up to a 245 tire can be installed until you get down to about a 35 series, then a wider rim is needed. In some cases a 255 can be installed, but it would likely have to be a 60 series or taller. This is all based on a stock vehicle and a "normal" offset and backspacing, both steering and drive axles.

oh okay, i'm not sure if my facotry wheel is a 15 x7, or wider?
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/elcamino-dude/Right.jpg

that is how my car sat when i bought it, that was the 215's on the front and 275's on the back, with those factory wheels, everything fit fine, they were P275/ 50R15's mounted on that factory wheel. I am actually not sure how wide that rim is.. but its factory

About the only way to find the wheel with is to measure them. Removing the tire is one way. I borrowed a rim caliper and measured a known 15x7 (on my truck) and they were identical. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that yours are 15x8 rims.

I'm also guessing that there may have been some modifications to your rear suspension to give it that rake. My El Camino still has the original shocks and sits pretty level although when viewed from the rear it looks like the left rear coil is sagging just a smidge.

At present it's sitting on 15x7 rims and 225/75-15s. The tires are 15 years old and I'm going to take this opportunity to get tires that are a little closer to stock height to bring back a little of the power. It's equipped with 2.56s like yours; plus I live at 8000ft (wheez).

so it is possible that mine are 15X8's then, never had a reason to check before. By the way, awesome el camino, and that picture looks great, looks like a really nice area
