I have always wondered why people keep a "collection" in their yards if they will never do anything with them. If the house is that rundown you would think the guy would want some money for his cars.

I know where two great cars sit rotting away.

The first one is a 1970 SS 396 that appears to be all original. The owner says he is "gonna fix it one day". It's been sitting in his run down shack for 25 years.

The second is a 1969 396 SS/RS Camaro with the original 396 and 4 speed tranny. This guy says the same thing, "I'm gonna fix it one day". Mean while his house looks like it wouldn't last through 40 mph winds.

It's a shame these people hold on to something they can NEVER fix.

there are many field finds around here where there may be as many as 50 or more 60s and 70s sitting rotting into the ground and aren't for sale. but it's like that everywhere. if i can't fix one up i'll get rid of it to someone who will. i don't want anything around that isn't a driver.

sad part is they let them rot away or become rat hotels until they are hardly worth the time and expense involved to restore. there is a red automatic 70 ss just like that one around here. black guy owns it. wont sell it but will let it sit outside year round and rot away .......

When you find them all you can do is make sure the owner knows you are interested in it and give him your #. I hounded a local doctor about 19 yrs ago about his car and bought it aug 07', sat in a barn since 89', 70 SS # matching with under 13,000 miles. sooner or later someone will end up with them.

Pretty cool. I for one hope the guys gets his dream one day and gets to restore it....and drives it. If not, oh well.....it belongs to him and don't eat nothing. I know of quite a few myself here in the country that are just sitting in sheds, barns, yards, etc.
68 Barracuda, 71 Cuda, 69 Mach I, 70 Torino CJ with shaker, 70 EC, 67 Malibu (this one is driven and been in primer for years), and others.
I was told the same thing, rot to the ground, after driving mine 33K miles and then parking it for 17 years. Why did I hold on to it?
I loved it and still do.
Not everyone had a golden spoon when they were born, family inheritance, or hit it lucky in life.
Let him hold on to his dream.....it's his life and his car. Not anyone else's.
Believe it or not......everything is NOT for sale just because someone with money wants what you have. These cars were beaters by my age group as teenagers and young adults. Cheap, fast, and we drove them HARD! Got rid of original stuff for whatever was the "thing" to have at the time on it.
You know why? Because no one else wanted them (cheap, dinosaur, junk) and they were not "collectors" items yet to be bought and sold.
Just speaking philosophically and to one one at all.
Rambling......

I think some of these owners just hang onto these cars just because they know other people want it and it makes them feel special. Plus in some cases the car may be the only thing they have left, whether its from a loved one that had it and is not with us anymore or its really the only thing they have left judging from the looks of some of the places some of these cars have been discovered in.

But aside from all of that. I find it rediculous that most of these owners that really believe they will actually restore it someday yet wont honestly stop and ask themselves if they actually can or will do so. Most of them either dont have the money or the time and knowhow yet they continue to fool themselfs with the notion that they will restore it.

I think there is a lot of truth to this statement and probably is quite common. If the guy has to give up his dream of "fixing up that car someday" that has to be a pretty hard pill to swallow sometimes.

(BTW Chris, I actually live in BP as well) :beers:

I used to be that guy that would "one day" restore it. Had lots of people stop and ask if they could buy it. Well.....my time came at last, it's been on the road now for about 3 yrs. and is very close to being totally done. Timing is everything, maybe he will restore it.

I stumbled on a 65 SS Impala in a field once. I got lost coming home from a swap meet and spied the car in a field just south of Lansing, MI. It was a 325hp 396, turbo 400, pwr steering, air, console, all together. The guy claimed it ran but he wouldn't sell it and he was using it for storage. Literally, storage. I had a few bikes, a bale of hay and a bunch of other crap crammed in it. So, I left my number in case he decided to sell. Two days after I purchased a 69 Impala SS this guy calls; so I gave the info to my brother who bought the car. We drained the gas tank and refilled, put a battery in and starter on, primed and she fired and ran. My brother cleaned the car up and drove it for a few summers. The car was white with white bucket interior so he named it Moby; as in the white whale. My brother sold it to a good friend of ours who claimed he was going to restore it. He completely diassembled the car and now it sits in a garage covered up with crap. It's been like that for 10 years now. He won't sell it, either. Sad... I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
