I bought a mini starter from the local speed shop. It's a no name brand. The problem is ,after I installed it and tried to start the engine the starter kept running. It quits only when I turn the key off. I've tried shims, but no change.I've exchanged the starter for another, same problem.I put the stock starter back in , no problem. This is on a 71' elky. Anyone got ideas? Thanks

Do you have a points ignition? What did you do with the wires that go to the "S" (start) and "R" (Run) terminals on the solenoid of the original starter? The mini probably only has a "S" terminal.

Did you check to see if pinion is still stuck in flywheel? If stuck it could sound like starter is still running. If it is stuck try to add shims. Thanks, Erik

Sorry, I reread your complaint. I see you already tried the shims. That will teach me to only read the first few lines. Thanks, Erik

The mini starter only has one small terminal. The battery cable goes to the TOP large lug on the solenoid and ONLY the start wire from the ignition switch goes to the SMALL solenoid terminal. If you are still using points with a 12volt bypass wire for cranking, get rid of the bypass wire.
