Looking to replace my non tilt column with either an Iditit or Flaming River.

Looks like they both require an "installation" kit for another $200 on top of the $600-700 for the column. I don't want to spend the money on the install kit if the rag joint does not fit. I have a GC steering box and I know it needs another rag joint.

Anyone use either of these columns?

I have Ididits in the 59 and 66 Elkies
Your best bet would be to contact Ididit and get a kit that is compatible with your gearbox.

When I did my 59, I wanted a vibration dampening u-joint with the dampening portion toward the gearbox (to keep exhaust heat from it). They had Borgeson make one for me, as it is not an off the shelf part.

I got the kit for the 66-----the rag joint that comes with the kit will not quite bolt up to the existing flange on the gearbox (I tried to cheat and not replace that piece---no go)
Just eliminate the headaches and get the kit.

These columns requier a universal joint at the fire wall, $85.00 and if you already have the G C box installed with new rag joint then you can cut your exsiting shaft to fit the universal joint. At least, that's what I did in my 66 with the Ididit paint grade tilt column shift @ $500.00 off e-bay

Is that price for a column shifted column? I bought an FR, and I think it was less then $300. For the steel type you paint.

It's for a keyed retrofit column with no lever. Maybe I can find a deal somewhere.

You can get the correct rag joint for your Grand Cherokee box from Lee Manufacturing for around $75.

I just got off the phone with Ididit, they said the kit needed for the GC box is part Ididit 3011007000......for $300. What gives. Wonder why this kit is $100 more.

They said it's a 3/4 30 spline. Is that the right one?

Give these guys a call: http://www.columnsgalore.com They're a NY-based company that refurbs columns and even adds modern options like cruise, hi-low beam wands, etc... for less than the Ididit or F.R. units.

If you decide to swap be sure that the replacement has a collapsible section like your original. Otherwise those steering shafts make wicked spears when the front end is squashed.

If you want a correct looking aftermarket tilt, Flaming river part # FR30002. All you will need is a $40 adapter clamp (FR 20300) for your old u-clamp to work. It is splined on the end to use your original shaft. Call me direct at 800-648-8022 ext 113. I am doing some tech there.

Interesting, I didn't even see these before. Wondering why would they make two different models?

Thanks for the info Micky, I'll give you a buzz if I have some time today.

Only bummer about this is you have to send your column back or get a core charge of $250 for non-tilt, or $175 for tilt. Column was around $475. Guess i'll go with an aftermarket.
