hi guys... I recently bought a new motor mount at auto zone and it was slightly different than the origional. They said they didnt have any others that matched the origional so i bought the closest looking mount. the new mount will not go on right, i opend it up and hammered it down and it still dosnt fit. Is there any store where i can buy origional motor mounts that will fit my 71 malibu in local areas.
Auto zone  is not a good place for parts.
Any help will help me allot thanx

I feel your pain!!!! I just went through the same problem with the same people. I have a 69 Chevelle
with a 496 and when i bought the mounts i asked for big block mounts for a 69 chevelle. They were nowhere near my originals. So i went back and looked in the catalog myself and found out that 69 chevelle and 69 malibu call for different mounts?????? The 69 malibu mounts i looked at were correct. To make a long story short they carry all of the mounts for a chevelle/malibu.
Let me know which engine was in or is now in your car and i will give you the part no. for the correct mount.

If you doa all forum search for Motor Mounts you'll se what the difference in mounts are.
If I remember correctly BB and Sb mounts are Identical. The 307 Mounts are different.
I know I lived thru this

I bought replacement motor mounts at Advance Auto and although they were significantly different looking than the originals, I had no problems with them. I replaced the passenger side with the motor in the car and wasn't able to get the heat shield back on it, so I left it off. The other side I just replaced before dropping in my new crate engine. I was told that the difference with the original mounts was that the longer part on them was some sort of a safety catch in case the rubber separated.
When you say you opened it up and tried to hammer it down, I'm assuming you were test fitting it over the stand with the engine out. I would tink any 350 mount would work. Perhaps your car has 307 stands on it. I don't know how to tell the difference, but you could buy a mount for a 307 and see if it fits.

Rocker,
I bought new mounts from NAPA, While the motor was out I test fitted them.It seems when they made them they don,t deburr them and there were some large ridges on the brackets.I took a file to the area that drops down over the frame mount after that they dropped on easily.

307 motor mounts are wider and taller than 350 motor mounts. Is it possible that your Chevelle had a 307? In that case the motor mount would fit like what you are describing. It will also make the engine sit higher on the mounts. I ran into this on my Chevelle when I swapped out the 307. At the time I didn't know and had the same problems. I bought replacement 350 frame side mounts and solved the problem.

You should try to measure your frame mounts. They should be 2 3/8 inches wide. This would be the tall and narrow mount.
