I'm looking at these two, and from what I've read, the quality is about equal. Any comments on these two 220 welders?

Any comments on the "Smooth Start" feature of the Miller?
Thanks.

I like Miller but the Lincoln is a good machine, too. I doubt the smooth start makes much difference after you are familiar with your machine.

You can't go wrong with either machine. Both are good quality. I agree with the above that the "smooth start" is an interesting feature, but unnecessary.

I've tried them all and you get about the same in all. I personally ended up with the Hobart Handler 187 after trying it and believe that it is the best bang for the buck.

Isn't the Hobart made by Lincoln? Doesn't it also only have pre-set heat ranges?

hobart is owned by miller. I have a miller model 252 220 volt unit and a lincoln 120 110 volt unit. I have used larger lincoln's at work and I prefer the millers. It is just a gut feeling for the way they work. You won't go wrong with either. I have a good friend that has been welding for 40 years and he loves some of the old hobarts.

I recently purchased a Millermatic 180 with the Auto-set feature...I am completely satisfied with it. Weld splatter is minimal, no more accidental arc flashes due to the smooth start, and setup time is super quick with the autoset. Yeah, some of the features are not needed, they just enhance the welding experience. Great product!!!

Yes Hobart 187 is made by miller and the gun even says miller on it. Has 7 settings to select voltage. Very well built and easy to pick up and start welding with. So far I have used it on sheet metal and frame repair and several home projects. Have welded up to 1/4 steel with solid wire no problem. The Hobart also has a little better current range than the two you listed above. 25-185 amps VS 30-180 amps. I got mine on Ebay for $600 shipped to my door. Use the money you saved over buying a miller and buy yourself an Argon/Co2 tank or spool gun. Hobart also has an excellent warranty.

I too have the Miller, but I got the 110 vt model. I read a lot that few guys said it was easier on sheetmetal then the 220 version. That is all I bought it for, I still use a stick welder on heavy steel.
