...but I need some suggestions as to what I should check next. Quick history: I've been doing a cam job with machined heads on my 307 at my college. It's all assembled right, but I seem to have a miss somewhere and I also have to hunt down a loose rocker arm (just a matter of time with a 5/8 socket and the valve covers off). It'll sputter and jump the RPMs all over the place (the cam is VERY hot for this engine, but it should just consistently idle really high). I've done the ignition twice already from start to finish, checked compression in all 8 cylinders, carb was rebuilt in July (did it myself). Anything else I should check? Maybe new plug wires? I FINALLY got the right plugs (only took Napa and Pep Boys 3 tries total). Any and all help is appreciated in advance.

I would recheck valvel's,initial setting's,with engine off.
If all else is correct carb. etc, timing chain new etc.
How many miles on rebuild?
Realy sounds like 1 cylinder not right.

Well, I just finished the rebuild of the top end (new cam, lifters, timing chani and gears, and new valve springs too). Like I mentioned, There isn't even really any "Milage" on it at all. My compression ranged from 120 lbs (in 2 different cylinders) to 140 lbs (in just one). The rest were about 130 lbs. I'll go in on Monday and recheck the rocker arms and reset them. Just to confirm, I put the piston on compression, and then set to 0 lash + how much of a turn? 1/2? 1/4? 3/4? I'm not certain about that one. Thanks a bunch!

Still learning the fine points of engine building.
