: '67 windshield cowl area, big hole!

Hey guys, I have major water on the passenger side floor every time I wash the car. I'd already determined that it shows up when I pour water down the windshield so yesterday I pulled off all the windshield trim and found this:

Looks like a big hole to me! So, what am I looking at to repair this? I bought the car a few years with an older paint job. The paint isn't perfect by any means but I'd like to save it if I could.

So I guess I'm asking, what are my options on this?

You will need to remove the windshield and replace the bad spot with this. 1964-1967 CHEVELLE DASH REPAIR PANEL (http://www.ss396.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=chevellecamino&Product_Code=RDP-430&Category_Code=DASHREPAIRPANELS) Trust me, What you see is only the tip of the iceberg. I can guarantee there is more rust under the windshield..
Heres what my 69 looked like.

If it is that bad there, you can pretty much rest assured that the rest of the panel will be needing replaced.
Personal opinion---not the easiesr job to tackle
Windshield will need to come out, and most likely the rust will have gotten to the top of the dash
Removing the fenders will be necessary to get the A-pillar covers off so you can get to the whole piece.

The particular piece that I got, did not fit all that well, and required some trimming to get it to set in the right place.
If you go the route to change the whole thing---get the new piece to fit, re-install the A-pillar covers, set the fenders in place, and put the cowl back on before tacking in place.
Then remove all that stuff again to finish welding.

Like Bryan said, this piece has to be perfect, it is the starting line-up point for you front fenders & hood, & if there not right, then the doors don't fit right, Then the doors don't line up with the quarters right etc. If your're not prepared to fix it correctly at this time, then I would suggest using some type of silicone to plug the hole, atleast you might save the floor pans.

Ouch! I was afraid of that.

Thanks guys, this is all very helpful, especially the pictures. Definitely something I can't really tackle myself at the time being. Looks like I'll clean it up best I can and check out underneath to see what's there.

Yes that is a common rust area for 67 chevelles. This is what I found on my convertible. If it has been leaking for a while let's just hope your floors don't look like mine from water damage.

That is a common area for 66-67 to rot. They also rot in the same places in the rear, so I would check that area too.

Can't add anything to the great advice & pictorials you've already received, but I was checking out your photos & was wondering what color your car is?

Take a look at my 67, the color looks real close....

I'm not sure since I didn't do the paint but it was originally Madeira Maroon so assume whoever did it tried to reproduce the same color.

Yours looks fantastic

Yours is also exactly what I have in mind for mine down the; 4-speed with a bench seat and blacked out interior. Right now mine still has Maroon interior metal parts but all the interior pieces are already there.

my car did not have much rust at all, but a problem area for mine was the back glass channel, it had pinholes and thankfully the glass shop here in town called be to inform me before they put the rear glass back in place (took it to them to do new windshield and reseal the rear) everything was out of the car except the drivers seat so i searched high and low for more spots but thankfully it had not done any more damage, so i fixed it with some POR-15 and then used some fiberglass to seal everything up, i dont think that it was bad enough for a new panel. but if its bad then i would definately go with what the guys are saying....good luck and let us know how it turn out!!!

Thanks for the compliments! I like the bench seat/4 speed look also. I went back & forth for a few years on which to put in the car, as I also own a correct set of 67 buckets & console. In the end, I decided to leave it as it was originally. In the photos I have a hurst handle & t-handle. I have since changed it to a "cheater" Muncie handle & white ball that bolts directly to the hurst shifter body. Looks really cool.

I am not positive, but I don't think factory GM Madeira Maroon had any metallic in it. I thought yours looked like Aztec Bronze, which is the color my car is.

Either way, I like your car the way it sits. It's too bad you have those spots. :( Like the others have said, there is probably more rust which you can't see.

Good luck with whatever it is you decide to do.

If you want to keep the paint and drive it then hit it with some POR15, puddy and RTV the shiat out of it. Then when your ready to tackle it go all out, atleast you can enjoy your car and keep the rain out of it.

Looks like the factory drain hole in the corner may have been plugged up with excess windsheild sealent which might have caused you rust issue. For now you could just silicone it up but try to keep the drain holes open in the corners to drain the water out of there.
