: 71 Parking brake cable adjustment

Hey Guys... I have a 71 2dr with the TH350 tranny that had the front parking brake cable seized up. I picked up a new one from The Parts Place and installed yet yesterday. My issue is that when I went to adjust it I used up all of the adjust space. When the pedal is depressed it does put some drag on the wheels but if I put the car in gear at it will roll forward at idle. I would expect at idle a properly adjusted park brake would hold the car. The center and rear cables appear to be original to the car.

So does it sound like I need to try to tighten them up more? If so, any thoughts or tricks on what I can do? I suspect the issue is that the other cables have just stretched over the years. Any other ideas what the issue may be?

Thanks for the help guys.

are your rear brakes properly adjusted? if not, the shoes will be too far away from the drum and you will have to push the parking brake pedal farther to get it to work.
it's also possible that the big cable that wraps around under the car is stretched or the hangers aren't in the right places.

Just to amplify what novaderrik said:

ALWAYS assure that the brake shoes are properly adjusted BEFORE trying to adjust the park brake cables.

Some folks tighten the park brake cables so much that the park brake equalizer rod between the primary and secondary shoes prevents the shoes from resting on the anchor pin when the brakes aren't applied.

Hmmm... Good thoughts. I failed to mention in the post that before I fixed the parking brake cable that I installed all new drum brakes on the back. I adjusted the brakes after installing them but hadn't done the "road" adjustment yet. So at this point should I back off the parking brake adjuster and do the road adjusting of the brakes and then try to readjust the parking brake?

Thanks
