Hi, its me again lol. Ok now the problem we are facing is the noisiest starter in the world! The block is a 350(3970010) out of a HEAVY DUTY 4 BOLT MAIN '71 UTILITY VAN. When we went to buy motor mounts it took em a while to figure out which motor mounts were the right ones, apparently the "heavy duty" version had certain things changed. Anyways in order to even get the starter to just plain work we have had to put a .150" shim on the outside starter bolt to tip the starter in! It is still noisier then god. I have a gear drive in my Nova and it is plenty louder then that lol. So I guess my question is, should this particular motor have had a specific "heavy duty" starter? The guys at Schucks didnt seem to think so, but.... Right now we have the one with the angled bolt pattern. If we just bolt the starter up with no shims there is over a 1/4" between the shaft that the pinion rides on and the flexplate, from all the info I have gathered you wan't this to be an 1/8" and you wan't .035" starter to pinion clearence, so I know what I am shooting for, but something seems terribly wrong to have to shim the starter this much. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
