: NEED HELP MOTOR BREAK IN
Robert G Nov 28th, 03, 4:37 PM I'm trying to get my motor to turn over, it will crank over and sound like it want to start but it will not stay running . i did a cam and head swap this summer so i no it ran before, i'm having to pump the gas to keep it running then it pops and a flame shoots out , i check the #1 piston is in the correct place (up stroke), timing mark is at 0
the cap, rotor and plug wire line up . i do have a 850 holly that i got used that i'm running
hei has a hot wire that gose right to the battery
WHAT WOULD CASE IT TO SHOOT FLAME OUT THE CARB????

What happens is your ignition is sending the spark to the cylinder while the intake valve is still open. The air/fuel mixture ignites, and since the valve is open, it continues up the intake runner and up through your carb. I often see this when people have their distributors 180 degrees off.

Robert G Nov 28th, 03, 5:35 PM could a bad valve lash setting cause the a flame to shoot out of the carb??? i ask because i went to roller rockers and had to set the lash my self
I feel that i did it right but you never know????
Metalmechanic Nov 28th, 03, 10:15 PM a poor valve setting could cause execesive noise and or runs rough and could snowball from there, but I would think you have a timing issue,
71chevelleconvtble Nov 29th, 03, 4:51 PM It sure does sound like your timing is way off. Try setting the timing at 10-15 degrees BTDC. Also, be wary of a used carb. Depending on how long it has been sitting around, they can get all gummed up.
Robert G Nov 29th, 03, 6:12 PM I CHECKED MY TIMING AND I SET IT TO ABOUT 10 DEG BFTDC THAT SEEMED TO HELP OUT , I HAD IT A 0 , at first I WILL PLAY WITH THE TIMING SOME MORE, one more thing ,the roller rocker on the drivers side was lifting the valve cover up , i found this out when i unbolted them to check out the valve lash
i think when it was down tight it was not letting one of the valves to open/close corretly
could this cause back fire in the carb? i got a set of valve covers that should work now
I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WAS THINKING SETTING THE TIMMING TO 0 DEG. I STILL HAVE TO BREAK IN THE CAM SO I WILL BECARFUL FROM HERE ON
HOW DOSE THIS SOUND 10 DEG. THEN REV TO 2000 THEN SET THE TIMMING LIGHT TO 28 DEG. WATCH .AND BRING THE LINE INTO 0 DEG. TOTAL 38 DEG TIMMING
IS THIS A GOOD WAY TO SET TIMMING? OF COURSE I WILL UNPLUG THE VAC ADV.ON THE HEI
THANKS smile.gif
71chevelleconvtble Nov 29th, 03, 9:42 PM Just leave the initial timing at 10 and break in your cam, change the oil/filter and then fire her up and set your total timing to what she likes (32-36). Set your idle mixture screws for highest vacuum/RPM. This is just what I would do. Good luck on your break-in. I know it is kind of nerve-wracking.
ssal396 Dec 2nd, 03, 8:15 PM Just to add something about the roller rockers, even with the tall covers they can still rub on the cover. You may have to dent the cover, or slightly grind the corner of the rocker...
Robert G Dec 2nd, 03, 9:09 PM ya ,I can see where its rubbing.looks like i have to grind a little off the corner of the rocker tongue.gif
