: Need some (quick) assurance, please, on starter

Hello,
I've got a 70 Chevelle with a 350. It's my daily driver and I've had the engine in for about 5 years now. Lately, when I go to start it, occasionally, I get the "click" and nothing else from the starter. I try a few more times and then it will start and when it does start it sounds just fine/strong. This problem has become more frequent, and I now have some time to fix it. I run Hooker Comp. headers; which leads me to believe it has just been cooked over 5 years. Naturally, the "click" and no starter movement makes me think starter, but is there anything else I should check before I go buy a new starter? Does it sound like the starter just has a few bad spots on it right now? This is my first time to replace one, so I have no prior experience in this field. All suggesting are apprecaited. Thanks. - Patrick

A bad battery connection could cause the same thing but I would agree with you most likely starter soleniod burnt on one side of the post.If you change the starter out take the +post off the battery so you kill all the power to the car. Then unbolt the starter paying attention to how the shims are placed so you can put them back the same way they come out.Unhook the wires and mark them so when you put the starter back on you'll get them right the first time if there crossed the starter won't work, and you'll have to unbolt the starter to get to the wires because of the headers. One thing I like to do is while the starter is on the ground under the car I make the wires longer,it's a pain to try and hold the starter hook up the wires and then get it into place and putting the shims in,if you make the wires longer you can hook them up while the starters sitting on the ground then the only one you will have too hook up is the large post on solenoid which will be easier than the small wires and nuts. After it's done you can wire tie the small wires away from the headers.Goodluck graemlins/waving.gif

JRS makes a good point about the wires. A heavy starter can be a b**** to hold while trying to connect the smaller wires... This may also be a good time to consider a remote solenoid hook-up. If you do the remote solenoid, make sure you get one that has both the S and I terminals ...

Thanks guys for the reply's. It was infact the starter solenoid. I ended up replacing the whole unit with a lifetime one for $36; what a bargain. I do appreciate the help. It was a minor pain to have to lossen the header bolts(to the passanger head) to get the starter out. It was heavier than I had thought but I was able to get in it without any difficulties. Thanks again.
