Does a neutral safety switch have to be installed on a 4-speed for the car to start, or will the circuit be made without it connected and allow the car to start?

Thanks,
JJ

What year? Are you converting from an auto trans to a 4-speed?

It's a 69 factory 4-speed. When I bought the car it didn't have an engine or tranny. I replaced the idiot light wiring harness with an aftermarket harness for a tach, and have purchased a tach. I have a 396 being built for the car and I'm installing the wiring and dash. There wasn't a NSS on the car already. I don't want to have to buy one as I also don't have the reverse lock-out hardware. Just looking to save some money right now for when I install the engine and break it in.

The 12 gauge violet and violet w/ white tracer wires will just plug together, those are the NSS wires. I'm not even going to run a NSS but do have a Hurst reverse light switch on the trans(Super T-10). If I ever run out of gas, I'll be able to move the car running the starter to get it off the road.

Exactly why I don't want to hook up the NSS. I had to do that with a 68 F100 pickup (go figure) back in the day, but it was broke down, not out of gas! Thanks for the help.

There is no such thing as an actual "neutral safety switch" on manual tranny 69 cars. It's a clutch depression switch that the above mentioned purple wires connect to. This prevents the car from starting unless you have the clutch depressed.

It's up to you if you can afford to take this risk.

Is there any chance in the future whatsoever that a young kid might turn that ignition key? Chances are the tranny would be in gear and your car is going somewhere!

Any chance of something falling across the solenoid or wiring short together?

In many cases these risks may be remote, but it's up to you on what your risks are and if you can afford to accept that level of risk.

I currently have my 69 bypassed, but that's short term plans. I will eventually connect my switch up.

69 with a factory 4-speed should have a start safety switch operated by the clutch. Attached is a pic of the switch and the post that is attached to the clutch pedal arm for operating the switch. The PPL and PPL/W wires will connect to it.

NSS or no NSS----still gonna start moving

Still a good idea to have
In my 59 and as will be the case in the 66 (Tremec TKO) they will only start in neutral. Kind of a pain to get used to--but I'm getting there.

This is the first time I have ever seen the actual switch for that....we were discussing it in the NW forum. I have a '67 and have looked for that switch but nobody reproduces it from what I know and I'd like to buy one for a '67 if there was one to buy but where?

That switch is reproduced. However if you are looking for one on a 67 you can stop, 69 was the first year for a clutch start safety switch.
