: Hard to start when cold
RAMBO Nov 2nd, 03, 7:14 PM My Girlfriends 69 camaro(307 2bbl) is very hard to start when it is cold out... Takes 5-6 minutes worth of cranking and goosing the gas pedal before it will finnaly start up.
When its warm out, or if it has been running recently when cold no problem- starts right up on the first crank.
I've changed all the regular tune up items- Cap & rotor & new plugs- No effect.
Yesterday i decided to replace the battery with a brand new Die hard and replaced the coil (looked like the org one!) with a new Accell super Coil.
-Today, STILL no effect.
What else can i look at? THis thing runs great when it is running, and has no problem starting if it is warm out, or has been run recently...
Thanks for any ideas-
Ben
bulb122 Nov 2nd, 03, 7:58 PM Check the choke on the carb. Make sure it's adjusted properly and working. When the car sits overnight and is cold, push the pedal halfway down and let up. Look at the choke flap, it should now be closed. If not, you need to figure out why...... I son't know what type of choke your 2bbl has. If it's not working, post what kind it is and I'm sure someone can help you get it set right. smile.gif

RedHot66 Nov 2nd, 03, 9:43 PM Sounds like a choke problem for sure.
RAMBO Nov 3rd, 03, 1:47 PM Ok- i got up at 5:30am today(when she leaves for work- yuk) and went out to check it out when she started it.
As soon as she presses the gas pedal the choke does engage and close up- however she always did that, and it doesn't help any.
I DID try one thing, putting my hand over the choke plate- and viola- it started up... So i'm wondering if maybe my air cleaner is too big.
The car came with the stock dinky little 2bbl aircleaner snorkle thingy- it was ugly so i took it off and replaced it with a open element 15" one (and adapter plate for the 2bbl carb opening).
Maybe it is letting too much cold air in. Tonight i will re-install the orignal one- hopefully that will help.
Old Longboarder Nov 3rd, 03, 3:10 PM The carburetor's accelerator pump isn't working.

RAMBO Nov 4th, 03, 11:40 AM Well, last night i put the dinky, ugly, stock 2bbl closed element snorkle air cleaner back on last night...
This morning, started right up on the first crank.
Guess I solved the problem. :D graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/waving.gif
Check to see if the open elment air cleaner is interfering with the choke linkage.
RAMBO Nov 5th, 03, 7:41 PM It was not interfearing with the linkage. The choke did function properly when the open element air cleaner was on it (it when it would start it would keep the rev's up until the pedal was punched again to kick it off. Besides- the problem still happened when i took the open element air cleaner off and tried to start it with no air cleaner.
Day 2- It started right up again for her this morning on the first try- So i'm 100% positive now that this was the problem-
It may be ugly, but i guess there was a good reason the general designed them this way. We'll keep it on there for the winter till the weather gets warmer again, then we'll put the pretty chrome one back on. smile.gif
red68camino Nov 6th, 03, 1:25 PM Ben ,
Bring that Camaro up to the house so I can take a look at it ....The open element should work fine on the car ...I think its a choke issue ...It needs to be looked at.. In fact , lets throw a 4-barrell intake & carb on her smile.gif ....Call me on my cell , Kevin .
RAMBO Nov 6th, 03, 1:51 PM Hey Kevin- You mentioned a while back that you had a cousin or somebody you knew who had a bunch of camaro stuff... Can you find out if they have an extra set of Upper and Lower Control arms for one they'd sell for a decent price?
I bought the PST super front end kit so i can re-do it, but i'd like to have the a-arms cleaned up and powdercoated, but since the thing is a daily driver for my girlfriend i can't have it apart more than a day or so- So i need to get an extra set of arms ahead of time.
I would be willing to give them back my origonal cores after i get them replaced- if that would make any difference...
Let me know!
L8tr!

red68camino Nov 6th, 03, 11:37 PM Ben ,
Yes , My cousin has a bunch of Camaro parts ...I'll call him and see if he has any A-arms for a 69...I won't be able to get back to you before Monday though. My son is running at the state X-country championship's in Pasco this weekend ...Got to go watch him , He's kickin A** this year !!!!!. Later , Kevin
Rain Man Nov 10th, 03, 3:22 PM As much as I don't like some GM air cleaners they
were carefully designed for its particular application. In your case the a/c makes it run
"richer" to help it start although your problem could still be deeper. In my case I've experienced two unique problems. A friend's '65 GTO w/ tri-power would backfire through the middle carb only when the bonnets were removed.
My '65 396 would crap out when I used an Extreme
filter on it but ran fine with or without the GM
open element setup. On the other hand the Extreme filter worked fine on a '66 427 Vette that I tested it on. I give up!
