So who saves it or spends it before it gets stupid? I just rolled $350 worth of coins. Now I just have to sign them all and take them to the bank. I got this bright idea because im about to order a set of seat covers for the elcamino.
Also anyone know how many dollars 3 gallons of penny's would be? jim

I actually just cashed in some change tonight. I go to the coin star thing that adds it up for you and gives you a tag to take to a cashier to get paid. I do it all the time. tonight was $60 but a couple times I`ve gotten $100 and once was about $115. Being that I`m poor it helps out more than you can imagine.

I do, but I dont roll them. My credit union has one of those machines that you just pour them in and it prints out a ticket to take to the teller, doesnt cost anything. Those machines at the grocery stores take 7%.
The last pickle jar I filled had $379. in it. The most I ever collected at one time was a 2 gallon jug that had a little over a thousand dollars in it.

Thats a great idea. I should start doing that and putting the money into her bank account. She`s only 4 so Ive got plenty of time.

I've been saving pennies for about ten years. I have around three to four gallons in a five gallon water jug. A cousin took in a five gallon jug full of pennies and got over $500. My bank will let you two wheel cart the pennies in and they will count them for you and put the money in your account at no charge.

I just cashed in 225.00, plus My Summit 50.00 coupon. I stash Mine in the garage for car parts.

I do the same thing and have been doing so for years. I actually go as far as to seperate certain coins into another container, state quarters, bi-centenial quarters etc.

If you guys find any old quarters, like pre 1964, they are a higher percentage of silver, 60 or 70 % I think, and worth a bit more than 25 cents. I myself have about a gallon of change sitting. I normally cash it in at Commerce Bank since they have a free machine that does it. I save all year and cash it in at Chevelle~a~Bration time  A couple times it paid for my fuel down and back.....of course that was before it shot up the last 2 years.

64 and before quarters are 90% and worth way more than .25!

65-69 halves are 40% silver and also worth more than .50.

I save change, we even saved all of our $1 bills and put them in a roll, that was fun!

Stick 'em on a pallet and ship 'em to me - I'll let you know. :D

I'm going to venture a guess and say $5,000 for the bucket of quarters, probably around $2k for the other bucket......that is a new engine! I agree, ship them on over and I'll weigh them for you...I can't guarantee you'll get them back though, although I might send you a parting gift:D

There was an 80 year old man around 7 years ago that turned in 3 x 55 gallon barrels full of pennies only he had been collecting for 60 years....it was on the news. There was $80,000 worth in total and it took the bank a full day just to run them all through the counting machine, not to mention a fork lift to get it on and off a trailer where they were on pallets and were moved very slowly and carefully to the bank. The sad thing is to think about how much interest he would have made on that money over 60 years even in the bank instead of collecting pennies at home! Just something to think about...

I turn my pennies in usually once a year and net around $300 and I roll them myself. The bank will take them for free up until a certain number of rolls, then they start charging 10 cents for every roll after that.

I have one of those big plastic pretzel containers from Sam's that I use for change. I keep 4 quarters in my pocket and put the rest of my change in there each day. I wait till it's full and take it to the bank and put it through their change machine (free for customers). Last time I had $640! Takes a couple years to fill.

I've started doing the same thing with dollar bills. Keep 5 singles in my pocket and the rest of the singles go in a drawer. Haven't counted them, but it's surprising how fast they multiply.

I use the proceeds for chevelle related expenses.

Find a credit union and tell your bank to take a hike!
You'll be glad you did.

We have a 1 dollar and 2 dollar coin in Canada and whatever I have at the end of the day goes into the play money tub and I use it for vacations and car parts. Last time I counted it I had around 1200 dollars in a one gallon coffee can that went towards the 468.

I have a ceramic dish one of my daughters made for me in grade school I toss my daily change into. Every couple of months I clean it out and get about $40-50. Goes for car parts. I also get old silver dollars when I go to the bank, one teller know and saves them for me.

I use a 5 gallon water jug and after several years it was finally full. Rolled and cashed them in just a few months ago and got about $900.00. Bank tellers not happy because they have to weigh them to verify count.

Yep...put all loose change and the occassional $1 in a watercooler jug for my daughter. It's been around for about 3 years now. She is going to be a happy camper when she gets to pocket that money.

We did the same thing for my son...he had over $400 in that one; not a lot of $1s though.

I never spend any change, I always break another dollar bill. Its getting harder to save it now because I use my debit card for most purchases so the change doesnt build up as fast as it used to.

I never spend change either. I put all my change every morning in a small container in the bedroom. When it gets full, it gets divided between silver and pennies into 2 different 5 gal water jugs.
One 5 gal jug is almost totally full of silver. The penny jug is about 1/3 full.
Should be a little ka-ching there. Been saving for about 3 years.
If I didn't do this, the money would have just been spent as I/wife went along.

Here is a guy that can serve as source of inspiration for you penny collectors. BTW, I worked in the same company with him in 1970 and he is a bit unusual.

That's what I use. I only put silver coins in there; pennies go in a separate container. Filled that big pretzel thing 3/4 full (took nearly eight years) and rolled half for a ~$700 bounty. Continued adding for another year than just recently rolled another 1/4 of the container for ~$300. Probably $60-$70 left in it. It's my "get outta town quick" fund :D

I never reach in my pocket for change, I just fill up and then throw it in a jar at home. When it's full I roll it and take it to the bank. Just a little extra savings.

Count me in the group that never spends change. It goes from my pocket, to the ashtray, to a plastic 5 gallon water bottle. Right now it is about 1/3 full. I'm making myself wait until its at the top before I cash it in. I'm thinking it will be well over $1,000.

it is surprising how much it adds up to. i just randomly kept change in a couple gallon jugs. when we moved, the movers joked about keeping it for us instead of packing it. it was $478. i couldn't believe it!

I use an old VH Plum Sauce jar. Loonies, Toonies, and quarters only. Usually get around $350-400 in about 6 months.

Like a few others here, I never spend change. It goes in a bowl until it gets full. Then I seperate it. The pennies go in a 4 gallon pickle jar. It's a little over half full. All the rest of the coins go in seperate bowls. Last time I counted the quarters there was a little over $400. I'm guessing I have over $1000 in change right now.

Every Christmas my dad would bring out a years worth of change and all the kid would guess how much was there. Then we all roll it and the closes to the actual amount would get a couple dollars. I still save my change and roll it around Christmas time.

I too do that. I collect mine in side a coffee can. The plastic ones. Any loose change at the end of the day goes in there. Two weeks ago. I just counted quarters. $734.00. Rolled myself. Now I can buy my Manifold & carb. Whats next? Headers & 3:73. Its like free money.

I just did this! I had a 5 gallon water jug, like the ones you see in offices that everyone gathers around to gossip. Anyways, I filled that thing up, took almost 6 years to do so, and took it to TD Bank (used to be Commerce) and they have a Penny Arcade that will count your change for free, even if you're not a customer. After several trips to all the TD Banks in my area, I had a grand total of $2,800!!!

you guys need to rethink those coin counting machines... the wife and I counted out $500 in quarters ( counted it twice) and went to one at a chevy chase bank and it ripped us off $11.25 not to mention we had to give the bank 10% on the $488.75 it said we deposited
That was the one and only time I will ever use one.

Feb 7th, 09, 9:48 PM
so for the convinence of running the change through a machine, you turned 500 dollars into 437 dollars. I thought of giving my daughter my jar of pennies, but since she didnt save it, I know she would flush it down one of those machines. jim
