Hello
neede help getting my engine running i never had it running purchased from someone else ..anyway wasent sure about timing so brought #1 cylinder up
and checked distrubitor cap its on # 1 and timing mark on 0 to 4 deg. also fire seems strong to # 1 plug good compression, gas at plug but wont seem to hit new plugs and wires plug gap at .35 anyone have an ideas ?please let me know asap.

Your timing could still be off. You have to be absolutely sure that you have the lead set in the general area because if you're off even one tooth
it may still look like it's pointing to #1 but you're advance is way off. The other possibility
is the carburetor. If your carb don't work right
it aint goin' to start.

if you have spark, then the next thing to check is fuel. do you have fuel going into the motor? is it back firing at all?
can you give us more details about the motor? what was done to it? did you put it together?

Here's an idea,

Just because #1 is at TDC and the mark is at 0 degree doesn't mean it's not 180 degree's out of sync. Do you get any pop or back fire? You may have to reinstall the distrib 180 degree's from where it sits now.

Of course you would still show fire at the plug, only it would be at the wrong time.

Just a thought.

Just a thought cause I had this happen to my Buick GS, could the harmonic balancer have shifted or spun causing the timing mark to be off? Just food for thought.
