I know a guy who is doing a frame off on a 70 chevelle. The problem is when he fired the motor up for the first time, he had the wheels turned to the right, and as soon as the car started the wheels went flying to the left. He said even if he held the wheel straight and let go of it, they still want to go to the left on their own. This is with the car sitting still, not driving. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? What would cause it, the power steering pump bad?

Have not ever seen this, but it sounds like a valve in the steering box is stuck. Perhaps some gentle tapping will free it ?

It sounds like a bad steering box. When I worked on Euclid haul trucks (off road) they had what is called an Orbital valve. That's a valve that controls the flow of hyd. fluid the the steering cylnders for turning direction. If one went bad it would do the same thing. It you had you hand in the steering wheel spokes when you started it up, it'd break you wrist.

interesting, I've never seen anything like this before, but I do remember an old girlfriend had a maverick (yuck) that in the winter time, when the car was cold the wheel would do the same thing. Don't get your hand in the way, because it would break your wrist.
