I bought a MOOG front end kit from a swap meet vender (unavailable:sad:) . Included upper & lower ball joints and upper control arm bushings. Also included 7/8 inch center link, an P/S (I think) idler arm (#K1542) and inner (ES 681N) and outer tie rods (ES 333 RL) and tie rod sleeves.

The steering pieces don't all fit together, can anyone help? I got the inner and outer tie rods to fit on the sleeves, no problem there.

The problem is the 7/8 inch center link. (I guess there was also a 13/16 inch center link too?) It's too small a fitting (the greaseable joints) for my 1966 original (P/S) steering arm (GM part #5693764 ) and my new (K1542) idler arm. There is play at the fittings.

I have a extra 64 Tempest steering arm (with P/S) (GM part # 5679208)that looks identical to my 66 (P/S) Chevelle steering arm except the hole is smaller and fits the new 7/8 inch center link perfectly.

So, my questions are
1. Why are there two different hole sizes for the pieces that attach to the center link (idler arm and steering arm)

2. Which idler arm (P/S) is the right one (smaller hole) for this 7/8 inch center link? I need to get another idler arm I guess...or, a different center link...

Thanks!

I looked it up- I am wrong about the extra pitman arm (GM 5679208) it is for a 68-72 car, not a 64 tempest. But it fits the center link. Perhaps I have the wrong center link?

different year (I thought the 64-67 was the same), but I used the 13/16" one on mine. Around the same time I bought a new spicer idler, and tie rod ends from napa. everything fit fine.

Well, I measured the tir rod hole to tie rod hoel on the center link on my original 7/8 center link on the 66 Chevelle and it is 14.5 inches across. The "new" center link is 15.25 inches across (wider) I think its for a later model car. Also my original 7/8 inch bar had thicker tapered ends (for pitman arm and idler arm) than the "new" center link does. The "new" center link has the code RP25809 printed in the middle of the center link in small yellow print. Any idea what it's out of??

The 68 -72 center link in longer than the 64-67 version.
I ran into this while doing my power steering swap on my 67, I used a 68-72 A body pitman arm on my steering box, then my center link was to big for the pitman arm. I replaced my center link and idler arm with the 68-72 to get the correct fit. The center link looked much bigger round and was longer than my original 67 version. It all works and I still had enough room at the tie rods to align it properly (the longer center link will take up more of your toe in adjustment out of tie rods) I hope this helps, sounds like you can buy a idler arm and be done with it.

Was there not a centerlink change in 65-early 66???
I have read that there is both 13/16 and 7/8 idlers and pitmans

Well I called the swap meet guy who sold me the parts and he (accidently) included the wrong center link. He has the "correct" link and were gonna trade via mail...
