: can anybody give me some instructions on how to insulate a 10x30 shed?
cannes Feb 1st, 09, 11:25 PM I need to insulate this 10x30 shed and make it very cool as I am in Florida and it gets really hot in summer. Also because it is going to be a room were dogs will live so it has to be like a regular room with living temperature condition.
i will of course be adding a big AC unit.
I want to know if i can get the stuff at home depot and if this is possible?
thanks for any advice!

bbmusclecars427 Feb 1st, 09, 11:44 PM Marty,To answer your question...Yes Home depot's have insulation. But 1st think is to measure the distance between the studs so you know what size you need.(14,1/2" or 22,1/2") For the 14,1/2 use 16"wide R19 "crafted "insulation (has either paper of foil on it)for the 22,1/2 use 24"wide R19 crafted. This paper or foil will allow you to staple the insulation to each side of the studs keeping it in place. For the ceiling, use thicker R30 or R38 crafted in it's proper width between the rafters.

gbswick Feb 2nd, 09, 12:46 AM Welcome to the site Mart. After insulating it like Howard said you can finish it off just like a regular room with either drywall or for durability you can use beadboard and add wianscoting.

It's for dogs! If it is regular stud construction, I would use fiberglass batts and cover that with FRPs (fiberglass reenforced panels). All of that is available at and home center.
You should consider venting and insulating the roof as well. A lot of the heat will be entering from the roof.

TCSS1970 Feb 2nd, 09, 10:14 AM Using batting insulation is cheap and works fine but....trust me if its for dogs when they get bored and if you don't finish the inside they will rip it out. You will at least have to put some osb on the botttom to keep them out of the insulation.

Howard, in my area, most stud walls (2x4) will accomodate an R value of 13. Does the insulation you are using have something special that can get an R19?
Stickman Feb 2nd, 09, 10:42 AM use "Raft r Mate" panels stapled under the roof sheating up to the ridge, BEFORE you stuff fiberglass insulation in the ceiling. If you don't let air flow between the insulation and plywood sheathing, you'll shorten the life of the shingles and sheathing. Put a ridge vent at the peak and the heat will passively flow thru the raft r mates' and out the ridge. To complete the air flow, you should also put small vents at the eaves. That alone will help keep the structure much cooler...

Bowtie-72 Feb 2nd, 09, 4:03 PM what about a paw operated ceiling fan???
definately insulate the roof from main area with drop ceiling or something. Sun beats down on it and will increase inside temps quite a bit. in that area, also make sure it is vented to let heat out.
bbmusclecars427 Feb 2nd, 09, 5:58 PM Tim, R-19 is a tighter version of R-13 for 2x4 stud walls.(better insul. factor)
