I am ready to install some BB springs in my '70. The car is currently body off, motor on stand so I have no weight to use the floor jack method. I have a std spring compressor installed on one of the springs right now and have compressed the spring about 3 inches. I know I need to compress it more. Can someone here tell me SPECIFICALLY what the procedure should be to get this spring installed. I have the spindle attached to the lower control arm at this point. Thanks for any help.
Here is the tool I am using:

O.K. John and Keith, here's what I did to make it work...I put the top Hooks (the one w/ the centered threads for the rod) on the 3rd coil from the top of the spring. Then I used a 1/4" thick by 3" wide (it has a 1"center hole)flat washer on the bottom side of the lower control arm "shock hole".I did not ever use the bottom hooks,(the ones w/o the center threads). With the upper hooks and washer in place,I run the long compressing bolt through the washer and threaded it to the upper hooks and started tightening and compressed the spring. This method allowed me to do 2 things...!st was to be able to lift up the spring into the spring hole in the frame,2nd after that,I could attach the upper control arm to the spindel.Once the 2 control arms are attached to the spindel, you can loosen the spring compresser bolt. The spring coils should now be open enough to turn the upper hooks sideways and pull through the coils,or come out through the lower shock hole.(This is why you set the upper hooks on the 3rd coil at the beginning otherwise if you had put the upper hooks at the top..it now would be pinned between the coil and the frame)

Howard, that is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. You have cleared up my confusion on this issue. The 3rd coil down, 1/4" plate and omission of the non threaded hooks at the bottom makes perfect sense. Thanks a bunch for your clear instruction. I read several threads yesterday and it seemed like everyone went from compressing the spring to attaching the spindle, with no specific "how to" in between. ;)

You could also use a length of 1/2" course or larger grade 5 or better threaded running stock. Put the running stock through the upper control arm, through the spring and down the bottom. Put large washers on both sides. I double nut to be safe. Use rachet wrench or large box wrench to tighten or loosen the nut. This is a safe method for loading and unloading springs. Once compressed, attach the ball joints and back off the nuts. That sould do it. Jerry

I fabbed a plate with large washers welded to it and have about 3/8" thickness. I will try using the spring compressor tool with the upper hooks only, inserting the threaded rod up thru the lower CA shock opng and see how that goes. Now all I need are my Moroso springs!! Thanks again all, I know you have helped many others who have been frustrated by this whole procedure. ;) I will post some pics of the operation when the time comes so others will be able to refer to it down the road.
