: Geese in the back yard!
pdq67 Feb 1st, 09, 2:13 PM Our neighborhood has a small pond in it and the geese use it a lot!
They get out of it, then take a short walk up a slight bank, cross the street and walk past our backyard to an empty lot and graze until they get spooked or just decide to fly back to the pond! Must be upwards at time, 50 of them, big suckers too!
What a hoot, our two wonderful little G/B Girls just love to watch them go by...

forcd ind Feb 1st, 09, 2:27 PM those things are a pain in the azz-they crap everywhere, and dont even get near them when they have eggs, they will attack you in a heart beat-where i used to work, they filled in the pond just to run them off-they had a guy with a dog try and get rid of them, but would return soon as the dog left
Finally Feb 1st, 09, 2:48 PM They're a real nuisance here. Golf courses, empty fields, grass areas around parking lots. There's a walkway/bridge, call the the Tridge, in Brighton. It goes around and over the mill pond. They spend a fortune cleaning the goose c*** up. The Canadian Goose use to be migratory but know most of them hang around here year round.
syracuse elkyman Feb 1st, 09, 3:18 PM these work really well to keep those pesky critters from filling up my yard with goose crap!!! http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/elkyman/Image009-2.jpg

pdq67 Feb 1st, 09, 3:29 PM I know, the goose poop is a mess, but I'm still glad they are around just like I am the pesky deer and other wildlife!
At least we can't be blamed for wiping them out!
He, He!!
I tell our G/B's not to step in the "goose poop" and Alison tell's Pa pa, "Don't step in the goose poop, Pa pa!!", when we walk over to the pond and watch them....

Krister Feb 2nd, 09, 2:08 PM Growing up, the suburban wildlife problem was rabbits. In the last 15 years it has become Canadian Geese. I am all for preserving / creating wetlands and water retention areas, but it seems like every neighborhood or business that now goes up has one of these – perfect for geese to multiple every year and never fly South.
C*** all over the driveway, sidewalks and patio. I have one goose that lands on the roofs of our birdfeeders, leans over and eats the seed. Now along with a Squirrel guard I need to create a goose guard. My wife laughs at me while I stand watch over the feeder only to add saying “what do you think they do when you’re at work?” I send our Cavalier Kings Charles out to scare them – pretty funny as she creeps low to the ground like a cat and them surprises them – only to end up eating their c***.
Forget about making snow forts or snowmen. As you roll the snowballs through the back yard – you pick all the goose c***
novaderrik Feb 2nd, 09, 2:48 PM ask the people of Fergus Falls, MN what they think about the geese.. those birds have destroyed a small lake that is in the middle of town in the 20 years or so since they were re-introduced to the area. this isn't actually a true"lake", in that it has no inlet or outlet. it's more like a 100 acre stagnant puddle right in the middle of town that people used to swim in 20 years ago.. now nothing but big birds live there and crap all over the yards of every house around it and make the parks essentially unusable. they also took over the man made lake behind the dam on the river that flows thru town, and have been known to hold up traffic at rush hour becasue a couple hundred of them will decide to just stand in the middle of the street.
many of them stay year round due to the open water in the river, but most of them migrate south and are probably the very same birds that pdq thinks are so awesome.
to add to the frustration of the citizens of the city, trumpeter swans have takes to the dead island in the middle of the dead lake. yeah, they are cool- imagine a hundred of those big white birds sitting in a dead maple tree and all around it- but it's a federal offense to even try to scare them away from their chosen habitat since they are endangered or something...
Beaux Feb 2nd, 09, 2:52 PM Arent those food?
Whoa man....food poops on my lawn then food ends up on a plate. If this were china i'd of already feasted on the neighborhood dogs.
Stalkingbear Feb 2nd, 09, 3:41 PM We have them around here also.... I do believe there is a 'goose season' here. :D
DOUG G Feb 2nd, 09, 6:25 PM mmmmmm goose
PaPa Johns 77 Feb 2nd, 09, 6:59 PM It's all cool until there gets to be too many and you can't keep the sidewalks and driveway clean and bird crap is being tracked into the house! Or someones kids end up with salmonella poisoning!
SixActual Feb 2nd, 09, 8:42 PM Here, this should bring a few down.................

IMO, that can apply to almost anything that you walk on outside. The only solution is to remove all your footwear before entering your home.
PaPa Johns 77 Feb 2nd, 09, 9:38 PM Have you really ever seen the damage they can do when their population in a subdivision or neighborhood gets out of control? Can't let the kids or pets out in the yard. I've seen it hapen in new subdivisions near or in what was wetlands. The people at first think it is really cool, all this great nature. That is until the population and the mess starts to grow! Getting attacked by them in your yard is always a fun time too along with the noise asociated with them! Yep, just taking off ones shoes solves the whole problem.;)
They not only leave behind a very stinky mess but tie up traffic and if you accidently run over one you could be stuck with one heck of a fine!
syracuse elkyman Feb 3rd, 09, 3:23 AM i know somebody that has a farm that has a Nuisance permit from the NY state DEC for geese:yes:
Sprinter Feb 3rd, 09, 11:09 AM Put a clothes line type rope around the pond or your house. They won't cross the line.
BusDriver Feb 3rd, 09, 1:29 PM They can be annoying, but honestly I like em. I find them serene for some reason. They just kinda meander along without a care and do their thing. If they wanna crap, they crap. Don't take anybody's s***, and protect their family fiercely.
Gotta admire that in a way.

.
I just realized that I hate geese for the very same reason I hate politicians. Didnt realize why until you pointed this out. ;)
68KMENO Feb 3rd, 09, 4:13 PM Invite them to dinner ............ :D

Return to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
Serve and Enjoy! :D
John D Feb 4th, 09, 5:25 PM The d*mn geese are as much of pest around here as the skeeters! Same thing - everyone thinks they're cute/beautiful/whatever.... until they have to scrape goose crap off every horizontal surface for 100 yards of the pond!
Then the fact they're dumb as a box of hammers! Like someone said, they'll just stand in middle of the road. Don't dare mow 'em down, cause the tree-huggers & Johnny Law will make your life miserable. Then... when they hatch the latest batch, the little buggers are "imprinted" with where home is. Then they grow up and hatch more pests that never leave.
Word of warning - Don't be under the "take-off" path if they decide to leave the pond. With the effort & exertion of take off, they lose control of their sphincters.....
