My chevelle was running fine since yesterday. I drove a few blocks and turned it off for a couple of min. then went to start it up and it wasn't kicking over. I was cranking it and gave it a little gas but heard like a put put when I gave it gas. I came back a few hours later and it started up. I got home 2 blocks and noticed the oil pressure light came on. I opened the hood up and every thing was hot the radiator hoses were hot and the dipstick was very hot. Need some help getting it running strong any suggestions.
thanks

How hot does the car run? If it is too hot and you don't have a guage and the idiot light does not work it might be running hot enough to break down the oil and have low pressure.

I have no clue what its running. I recently changed oil and put 4 and a half quarts in. I checked it and it was at least a quart low.I addded another quart and I check it again. I put a new thermostat in and checked the old one.The old one opened up when I put it in hot water and closed after cooling down so that wasn't the problem?????

ya, i had the same thing happen to my car a few months back. i'd like to tell you how to fix it but i cant. mine would run really hot, and eventually die. as it started to die it almost seemed to be making a scraping sound. it'd take a few hours before i could start it again, before that and it wouldnt even crank over. im just putting it back together right now hoping its not ruined. my guess is the timing on mine was WAY off which was making it so hot, i just turned the distributor till the engine would run w/o knocking
if it is ruined, off i will go to buy a 350 shortblock...
where in Cali are ya?

hey 10 bolt, i know your learning as you go but do you have any tools available. i.e. timing light, oil pressure gauge. also what kind of carb/what condition is it in? Possible that your float level is misadjusted and dumping fuel constantly the vacuum as it shut off would pull in additional fuel until total shutdown. Would account for the no start and "put" you heard on initial restart. The put could have been an intake backfire. It started after a couple hours because the fuel dried up. Possibility. Also if your timing is too advanced/retarded it wouldn't start with a carb problem. Second if you have a gauge, pull the pressure switch and read the pressure at idle and at around 3000 rpm. should increase. At the same time your pressure gauge could have a totally unrelated fault causing it to illuminate( switch/gauge defect., wiring prob. etc.) I know it may be a little much but the more you learn the easier it gets the next time. And remember KISS keep it simple stupid. dont look for an engine problem because of a loose wire or carb out of adjustment. anyway hope it helps
