Probably an easy question, but is the spare tire wheel the 5 spoke SS wheel for a 72 SS Chevelle? IOW, did (5) SS wheels come with the car from the factory? I couldn't find in the AI manual. Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I know GM was counting pennies and I thought they might have substituted a steel wheel for the spare back then.

Sorry- I mean a steel plain wheel (non-SS), of course.

Back in those days, the spare rim was always the same as the other four mounted on the car. The only exception I'm aware of is the cars that came with the Space-Saver spare tire, which all came with some funky/weird plain steel wheel.

As Bill said,most of them were space saver tires and the were 775-14 or f-78-14.A full size spare tire would fit on the rim so the BF goodrich tires went off to the garbage pile making these very hard to find.The rim was a steel rim painted black and were made by Michigan wheel but I have seen a few Kelsy Hays.The Mopar space saver of the same era,I have sold on Ebay for $385.00 up to $850.00,but the space saver you are looking for is harder to find.They also came with an air bottle.Good luck on you search

HUH? I've never seen a '72 (or any year for that matter) Chevelle come with a spacesaver spare.:noway:

I haven't either. Although the spare wheel was the same as the on-ground four, the spare wheel lacked the trim ring and cap IIRC.

Our 71 Grand Prix was ordered with the space saver. ( I know, not Chevelle related.... :D)
