: Anyone have a "Husky" tool chest from Home Depot?
Alwhite00 Jan 31st, 09, 9:27 AM I was looking at the 41" (Husky I think) tool chest. 10 drawers on thge top & 10 on the bottom, Black, Cas struts on top and the drawers are self closing when you get them about 2" from being shut. Ball bearing slides - All in all a pretty nice box - Sells for around $800.00.
Just looking to se if anyone owns one and how do you like it?
They had them on sale on black friday for around $600.00 but I didn't have any way to get it home and I am an hour away. Anyone ever get them to come down on the price of anything that wasn't on sale?
Thx.

I got a craftsman ballbearing grip latch for just over $600. It's a 12 drawer. It came recommended from our shop guys over the husky sold at home depot. I like how smooth the drawers open..

How wide is it? - I guess the reason I am leaning this way is it has 10 drawers in the top chest ansd 10 drawers in the roller and they are pretty big.

Chicken Coupe Jan 31st, 09, 12:07 PM A couple of ways you might save some $ on buying a box. I have started doing this on every tool I buy now:
1-Check the local Sears. This is the time of year they rotate floor displays with updated models. I got 30% off on mine that way.
2-See if there is a local Sears "Clearance Center". I have visited a few over the years and found brand new stuff at well reduced prices. Also check the Sears Parts and Repair dept.. As an example, if someone loses the keys to the box or a handle is loose, they'll take it down to them and get it fixed, then sell it in there, cheap too.
3-Ask about buying the floor display. Sometimes they are ready to replace with an updated item or don't have any "in stock" besides the display item. I got almost $200 off on a Weber grill by just asking about an adjustment because it had a scratch on it.

On the Costco box, check the number of drawers. A buddy at work has one and it doesn't have any shallow drawers, they are all deep. He has this large stainless box and not enough drawers. It won't hold all the tools from his much smaller Craftsman box.

My boss got that one for me a couple years ago. I was shocked. Stainless steel, ball bearing drawers, and the pads in the drawers were even included. The top lid even has some mini gas lift cylinders. Mine has a mixture of shallow and deep drawers $600.00 Good deal. Only thing....China product.

My craftsman is just the bottom 12 drawer. I'll have to measure when I go out to work in a bit.
Tom Mobley Jan 31st, 09, 12:20 PM I thought that CostCo SS box was cheap china junk until I saw how much it weighed. just about need a forklift to put it in a pickup.
dscabra Jan 31st, 09, 5:59 PM I have a large Husky tool box -- possibly the same one you are looking at. The quality is awesome and at the time I was shopping, I couldn't touch a comparable Craftsman box for the price. The top has ten drawers and the bottom has 13 (one is the full width). All the pads came with the boxes; even the heavy pad between the bottom and top was included. The bottom comes on a pallet, and weighs about 200 - 250 pounds. The top is another 100 - 150 pounds. All the drawers have ball bearing full extension glides that have a soft locking feature to keep the drawers from opening when you need to move the box. Just push the drawer in until it stops, then another little push with some additional pressure moves the drawer another 1/4 inch and holds it shut. The top has gas struts to keep it open when you want. I've attached a picture -- pardon my mess. :o

Alwhite00 Jan 31st, 09, 10:59 PM Thanks for the input. I went and looked at the husky (different than Dscabra's) and I also looked at the craftsman box. The husky was really thin and no reienforcement on the lid or the full width drawer. Also on the large lower drawers they had only one slide per side.
I ended up going to Harbor Freight (I know, I know - Let the flaming begin) just to see what they had and they had a 41" box on sale. The lower 13 drawer was $399.99 & the upper 8 drawer chest was $289.99 - This thing is BEEFY - Came on a skid wrapped in cardboard with wood around it. It probably weighs 500 lbs + together, Nice wheels, Double slides on the big drawer and the metal is really thick with a reinforcement channel on the lid & full width drawer. Also came with drawer liners & the mat to put between the boxes.
I know it's not a Snap-On or Mac but it will work great for me.

Great looking box. I found a picture of the same model of Costco box that my buddy has. You will see that it is a nice size but not enough usable drawer space. It needs some shallow drawers to increase the usuable space.

I have 2 of these boxes. Unfortunately the 1st box tipped over (yes, it can happen) and it was one of the most exciting things I have ever seen happen right in front on me. Had I not moved the Chevelle 30 minutes before it would have been real exciting. Anyways, the box recevied very little damage so I figured for the price it was tough enough in my books to go buy another because I was out of room. This box has decent sized drawers that are not too big or small in my opinion. If I was still throwing wrenches full time I am not so sure it would stand the test of time but I looked around before I made the purchase and it was the best bang for the buck I could find.
chevyman100 Feb 4th, 09, 10:40 AM what you need to get is a snap-on tool box if it breaks they will fix for free like the tools if they break you get a new one...they are expensive but worth it 100%.

What mess? :)
JaneMarie Nov 24th, 09, 1:23 PM Yes. And currently still have the "stupid is as stupid does husband" I bought it for. :hurray:It was the tallest largest one home depot had last holiday season. Is there an easyish not very expensive farm girl sort of way to open it? I'd prefer not to have to pay a locksmith. The spouse lost the tiny keys not long after loading it with all my terrific tools. A hacksaw to the top drawer where the lock is did not work. I currently am debating between driving his motorcycle into it or hefting it over his fat head. Usually I am not the violent type. :beers: Suggestions?

Does the lock have any small numbers on the front of it?
1969 El Camino Dan Nov 24th, 09, 9:54 PM JaneMarie,
You should use his pin head to pick the lock!
Go get a big @ss screwdriver w/ a semi-slim shank and slam that lock hasp sideways!

SCOTTS66 Nov 25th, 09, 11:43 AM Most tool boxs have a way to unlatch the lock bars. They are normally located in the back of the bok. Some have plates poprivited over them.drill out the rivit and pull up on the bars and the drawers should open. The locks can be removed at that point and replaced. If the box is at home dont bother locking it.
I must say the "farmgirl" thing with the :beers: makes me want to come over and get it opened for you.

I have a 20% off cupon but I am waiting for the side box to go on sale. I have seen it on sale ($200.00) in ads but is says catalog & internet only and the cupon is only good for in-store purchases. Someday.

ToocoolZ28 Nov 25th, 09, 3:39 PM I got this one from Sams, its from China but man, this thing is heavy duty. It must weigh 400 lbs. Notice plenty of deep AND shallow drawers. I paid $1200 for the set.
