I decided since I didn't have the 5 or 600 dollars for a freeair respirator that I would make my own . guess what ? it works ! so far i might have 50 dollars in it . I had a full face mask allready, so I didn't need to buy that . I got some new 3/8th's air hose and a medium size tote with a lid , and a new air pump, the kind that you use to blow up an air mattress . I mounted the air pump inside the tote , cut a hole for the air hose and another hole for the cord , i then sealed the holes with adhesive caulking . in PA you can't put the air pump outside in the winter as the air would be to cold to breath. I mounted the tote on the wall inside and ran a 1" 1/2 piece of pvc from the tote to the outside of the building for my fresh air intake . the tote is big enough to put a small heater or a light bulb in , in case i want to warmup the air . I ran the air hose into the front of the mask , I also removed the cannisters and sealed the holes . I tried the new system out in the house before I tried using the new system in the shop , the pump works great . i used it today for the first time spraying epoxy , no more fear , awsum .

I'd like to see pictures if you got any. Just out of curiosity. I bought a Neoterik system a few years ago that was a lot less than $600, but still not cheap. I'm very happy with it except that the hose is pretty heavy duty and frankly inconvenient to drag around with you. I have no doubt that a system can be put together for a ton cheaper than the systems available, but I guess when it comes to the air you breathe, ya gotta be pretty darn sure the pump is up so snuff and sending you clean air.

Sounds like a winner. As long as your pump puts out enough volume to maintain positive pressure in your mask you'll be good to go. I've been keeping an eye out for a used Gast oiless pump after buying a couple full face masks on eBay.

Looks good. Make sure your hose is plenty long enough to get that pump away from any fumes. My Neoterik pump has a replacable filter over the inlet. I'd suggest that, but I'd be afraid it might strain the pump or cause drop in air pressure. I'd also wonder how long a pump like that would last since it will be running a lot. Hey at if it burns out, it's cheap enough to get another one. Looks like it'd work. Let us know after you test it out.

Just a little warning here on home made supplied air, be very carefull, if you haven't had any training or did a lot of research on it, you could get in trouble in a hurry, this is serious business here guys, use caution.

I worked with all the different systems for 20 years, I have been trained on it and trained others on it, supervised people working with it, and I would never attempt to build a home made system.

If you do build a system, do the research on it and what can happen.

Like hobby air and sas and whatever, take the time and read about the different systems offered, read about confined spaces, read about in plant supplied air, read everything you can, educate yourself before you hook yourself up to a homemade system.

we had a portable Bullard fresh air setup for painting at work. it worked well, unless your buddy was outside blowing cigarette smoke into the intake. this happened pretty regularly. imagine that. the real jokers would fart on the intake tube. good fun.
