: Pics of my new custom console
GSOUPME Jan 30th, 09, 4:35 AM Finally got my consol done, turned out well I think. I will have all the same type gauges when it’s all done but just put the ones I had in to see how it would look.
I have holes cut for 2 more gauges behind the cover, but probably won't put them in till I get the rest of the car done.
It's coming a long
I will probably change the cup holder to a more recessed one once I find one I like better.
Let me know what ya think…
Malibulvr Jan 30th, 09, 6:05 AM Great looking console, love the A/C vents. I would do one similiar but maybe have the gauges move down on a 45 angle and rotated a bit towards the driver. Very Hot! I was looking at putting a 85 Camaro console in my 71 and taking the radio area and doing something similiar to yours with the guages.
cuisinartvette Jan 30th, 09, 6:37 AM Hey that looks great, like it "belongs there". Details on how you built it!!
Cupholders are nice, too gotta have those.
Beaux Jan 30th, 09, 12:23 PM I really dig that!
Agreed - any details, pics, as you built?
I think thats killer. I saw a similar design on a mid 60's impala but it was done in polished stainless and I took a bunch of pictures. I think yours came out super clean. GREAT stuff there!
Steven's 72 Jan 30th, 09, 12:37 PM Thats Sharp. Endless possibilities. Wish I had the Know how, Would do one for my 72
eyewanta65 Jan 30th, 09, 1:10 PM Very nice, quality work there.
sixredsoxfans Jan 30th, 09, 1:16 PM Very nice job!
72ElCamino Jan 30th, 09, 1:19 PM Wow that does look very nice. I was leaning towards a center console for my car now that I got some buckets for it. As others said, any pics of the building progress when it was a WIP?
Matt
ssal396 Jan 30th, 09, 1:32 PM As petty as it sounds, cup holders would sure be nice to have, especially with a 4 speed....
Nice job there :thumbsup::beers:
cuisinartvette Jan 30th, 09, 8:30 PM That almost looks like a modified console assy out of an 84-89 C4 Vette. I do like the AC vents there, also. Nice touch.
wills65 Jan 30th, 09, 8:48 PM Really nice! Thats exactly what I want in my car. Lets see how you made it...
GSOUPME Jan 31st, 09, 12:35 AM Thanks for the kind words guys.
First off I hope I didn’t give the wrong impression that I built this thing lol.
I definitely do not have the skills for that. I had it build though, and I designed it to my liking. I did steal the a/c vent idea from a car I saw at SEMA 2 years ago though.
It does look like a 4 speed but it is not it’s a 700r4 auto. I just like look with the boot around the shifter.
I wish I would have taken a few pics of it when Doug (the guy who built it for me) came over the other night and fit it to the car. But with all the excitement of actually getting it done and doing the trimming on it for it to fit.... I forgot to take pics of it before it got covered.
It’s a simple wood frame made out of 1/4" birch plywood. He used strips of the birch to reinforce it and a couple of pieces of 1" wide 1/8" thick straps of metal in just the right places. Then used the same 1/4" birch to make the panels out of. It's light and strong and since the whole top piece can come out I can make changes to it if I need to. It even has room to add speakers to it if I wanted too.
The whole top piece comes out easily to remove it... which I hope I don't have to do once I get it all done, but would be easy to do.
Needless to say the guy who built it for me made it look easy and I would recommend him to anyone. Not exactly CHEAP but I was very happy with the outcome. He did it exactly the way I wanted and did the whole thing in a week.
I am going to have to take it out to get the wires for the gauges in place so I will take some more pics of it out of the car if anyone wants to see them let me know.
Be happy to answer any questions anyone has about it...
rchevellea Jan 31st, 09, 1:09 AM very nice!!!! details details details !!!!!!!:D
Steven's 72 Jan 31st, 09, 10:08 AM Something like that solves the radio issues, and gauge issues. Having it all in one place instead of cutting into dash, and having things hanging from the dash. What does a project like that go for?
GSOUPME Jan 31st, 09, 11:40 AM Well with materials and everything for the console it was $450. From what I saw online that you could buy that were prefab fiberglass or something else and the fact that i got to have it just the way I wanted I think it was fair.
He came to the house to my shop 4 times and fit it and tweeked it so it hit me in the leg just right and everything was the way I wanted to.
He also said once I get the gauges that I want and everything wired he would come back and make sure its all done.
Highway Star Jan 31st, 09, 12:23 PM That is bad to the bone. I am truly inspired. Not that I could design and build something that fine, but I am going to try it. Since my car was a bench/column car and now has buckets/floor shift, I need one. I will defineitely be wiring mine for sound, and hooking in some gauges.
Awesome craftsmanship.
Malibulvr Jan 31st, 09, 1:26 PM Yeah looks a lot nicer then the fiberglass ones, not too hot on those.
Rowdy Feb 9th, 09, 10:46 PM It has a rectangular A/C vent on the rear of the console for the back seat too.
javablack Feb 11th, 09, 8:15 AM looks great:thumbsup:
mcmlxix Feb 15th, 09, 4:13 AM I really like that console! Can you PM me the info on the the shop that did it? I assume they're local and while I'm not ready yet... I can still put them in my contact list for future interior work...
PS: There is a company that sells billet aluminum gauge bezels that angle the gauges toward the driver. It was a marine company that some one had posted a link to over on protouring.com .... Found it ... Rex Marine (http://shopping.rexmar.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=gaugebezels)
