Very cool! I've seen pictures of that before, but this is the first I've seen video.

Looks like a Fordson Model F tractor they used.

Edit* Just watched all the way to the end... that Chevy touring car with the drums was way cool. I've never seen that before. I wonder if any exist today??? I'd like to race them. :D

Maybe in a straight line, but you're a pro-touring guy, and you might have a problem in the twisties... :)

There is a Ford Tractor with the Snow-Motor setup in the Truck\Agriculture Museum at Woodland CA. According to the plaque, it was used for Mail delivery from Tuckee to North Lake Tahoe..
It 's the only example I've seen. I thought it was just about the coolest piece in the place. (Not really, the entire museum is very cool). It's really neat to see one in action in the video.
I just assumed the one in the museum was purpose-built by Ford, but now it seems that it was an "attachment" from an aftermarket supplier Armstead. I'll bet there are at least a few of them laying around somewhere.

Here's a link to the museum: www.aghistory.org A description is on the Our Collection page. I recall the tractor being an 8N, but they say it's a Fordson.

If you're ever in the area, that place is a "must see". I just stumbled on it when I was there on business about 3 years ago. It's actually 2 Collections combined. Heidrich-AgEquipment and Hays-Trucks.

Edit: A Wiki article on Screw Propulsion talks about the Ford Snow Devil, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screw_propulsion

Hey Derek,
That pic of the "T" with the tracks and skis looks fairly modern. Do you know anything about it? If it's yours I will just have to hunt you down and steal it!! That is really sweet! (Just kidding about the "steal" part. I'll just drool on it.).

Looks like the Rouskies perfected the screw drive for this heavy-duty off road machine.

I sure wouldn't want to get run over by it. :noway:

I think Derek should build a working frame and put Andy's 69 vert on it

The car is mine, the track/ski kit belongs to my Dad, which we believe is around 1926-27 vintage "Snow Bird" brand kit. There's no tags or name on it anywhere, but the skis look the same as the Snow Bird 1925 design drawings, and the tracks look the same as their ad for the "New and Improved 1928" kit. We have a 2nd set of tracks we haven't identified, but no skis.

Thanks Derek.
I'm jealous, sir. Like I said before, that is a sweet pic. I would love to see that combo in person on a snowy day. That sort of "uncommon" add-on to vintage cars is right up my alley.
I would love to have a "T" in my garage... and an "A" and...

Thanks again, Tom
